HI all

As some of you may recall I have joined a gym and I have been working BLUDDY hard at it too!
Doing the program set for me... extending that.. also doing a bit of running on top. (About an hour and 10 minutes 4 times a week)

It has been exactly 2 weeks since my first 'session', so I thought I would weigh myself

I am HALF A STONE HEAVIER than I was when I started
Now, I heard that because you gain some muscle you will not lose as much as you want for a while, but I haven't lost anything at all!!! It's the bluddy reverse Shocked Sad

Surely I should have burned off a lot of fat and that would balance out gaining the weight of the muscle
I was feeling better in myself. Thought my face looked thinner, trousers looser, but was that just positive thinking and it is all in my head??

Now I know my weight I feel fat as sh*t again Crying or Very sad

I just can't get my head round half a stone.
Jeez Shocked

*Edit: AND I have been eating healthy. Salads, supplements, veggies....
Pooie Mad Crying or Very sad

Stop weighing yourself, and go by how you feel and look.

That's pretty good advice. Also go swimming it's supposed to be a brilliant way of losing weight.

Half a stone in two weeks does sound a bit odd (it's be quit a good target for those trying to put weight on, not lose it) but I wouldn't be too concerned, it's early days yet and your body is going to need to get used to the change (it may be trying to 'fight you', storing every calorie it can)

You mention supplements, what kind of supplements? Taking on more proteins and calories (in healthy food) will make your body put on more weight (if it amounts to more than 'normal', and is not burned up by work out). This isn't much of a problem either as it sounds like you're more toned.

As stated, don't worry: being healthy is not always about weight. You sound like you're seeing physical benefits already, this will continue if you keep it up; over time your metabolism will speed up and burn more calories; after about 6 months you'll feel (and look) a different person.

Thumbs Up

Just things like green tea, garlic, b complex, vitamin e
Not like weight training stuff Laughing

So half a stone is odd... Oh god
Stupid body

I don't starve myself, far from it, .. I know that if you don't eat enough your body thinks..'oo when will I get food again, I had better hold onto whatever I get', and that is when you retain the weight

I have (approx) the following in calories every day:
Bfast(150)
Morning snack(50-100)
Lunch(200)
Dinner(400-500)
Afters(100 sometimes)

I WILL keep this gymming up! I can't let the scales defeat me Laughing Shocked

I can see definition in my legs so I know I am getting toned

With men and women it is different with regards to the gym I feel
Men want to gain muscle and size. It doesn't really matter about weight (not all men, but a lot). They want to look huge
Women want to just weigh less. End of. And look good

Maybe I should give the weight lifting machines up? Just concentrate on aerobic stuff??

Bad choice of words on my part (what was that you were saying about men and women being different Laughing ). I'm a skinny bugger and putting on half a stone would be something of an achievement, my metabolism always seems to want to fight me!

If you're just going with the first one or two weights (assisted machines right?) it shouldn't make you put on too much muscle, however, if you do see one muscle 'bulking up' then feel free to lay of that particular machine.

Oh, legs weigh a lot, if yours are more toned that could account for a lot.

My legs are getting very toned!
I have noticed my calves are more defined and I have 'domey' biggish muscles on my upper thighs (just above my knees at the front)
I am quite proud of them! I ask people to touch them a lot Embarassed Laughing
That is what tons of sweating, brisk, heart pumping work on the dreaded stepper machine does for you Twisted Evil Surprised
God, that machine is evil Evil or Very Mad

My routine is as thus (for anyone interested):
Treadmill (slow walk to fast walk) - 5 minutes
X Trainer - 15 minutes
Rower - 5 minutes
Windjammer - 5 minutes
Stepper - 10 minutes
Floor stuff (stretching, sit-ups) - 5 minutes
Weight machines (abdominator/shoulder press/leg press/chest press/hip abductors) - 15 minutes ish
Treadmill (speed walk then running) - 5 to 10 minutes
Cycling - 10 minutes

RE weights.. I was on the first one or two weights, but I have extended that to what I can manage.. maybe 3rd or 4th weight. Is that too much? Shall I ease back again? For toning how much should i be doing?

I think I should just go on how I feel

When do you recommend i weigh myself again?

Jo xx

There is no way the you've built up muscle in that time. It takes a lot longer to build muscle than to lose fat. As I think someone said it's a bit of a shock reaction by your body to all the sudden exercise.

Thing is to take it easy at first then increase as your muscles get used to the idea. If you don't want to build muscle then do a lot of reps with a small weight. To gain muscle, should you want to. Do very few reps with heavy weights.

Mmmm If you do not want to bulk out and just become fitter you need more reps and less weight, from what you have said you are not rearly doing a great deal that would cause weight gain.

I would normaly expect 20 mins on machines and an hour in the gym followed by 15 mins rowing, twice a week plus swimming and a jog and remain the same size. So I would think it just your body setteling down so give it a month and seem how you goes.

Last year, I paid out more money than I actually had for a personal trainer to help me get in shape. After about a month, I felt great, my pudgy tummy wasn't poking over the top of my jeans as much, and I was feeling like I was finally getting back to being "in shape".

I was very diappointed when I weighed myself at the gym to find I'd GAINED 10lbs. Sad When it got too expensive, I stopped going to the gym and over the next few months of travelling constantly for work, gained even more.

I've been trainng on my own and watching what I ate recently. I don't own a scale though, so I've only been noting my progress by measurements and how loose my clothing has been getting. It's a lot more encouraging to do it that way, becuase I can see actual progress, instead of just relying on a number on the scale.

So I say: go by how you feel, and how your clothes are fitting, and forget about weighing yourself. Smile

It sounds to like a classic case of 'Gym' sydrome.

Either that or they are slipping something odd in your drinks to keep you coming back for more to loose the weight.

Gym's aren't my thing, and reading this has just confirmed it even more. Jo, please if you must go, then just do it to enjoy yourself. Worrying about weights/calories/muscle size or definition shouldn't be part of the equation.

In all honesty my knowledge is limited when it comes to 'girl programmes' (i have trouble enough with mine!) so another BCFer may be better placed to give a specific answer.

I'm presuming you want long and toned muscles? I this is the case then it is better to increase reps, not weight.

If your body shape is Mesomorph (big boned -in the literal sense, not in the social 'fat' sense - and tends to like to build muscle), you'll want to keep weight training to no more than a few times a week.

Difficult one this: it's important to keep track of weight (it can be a marker for progess and a good re-inforcer) but doing it too much can take the fun out of it, and, more importantly, can make you lose sight of the better 'well being' that being healthy promotes. For now, concentrate on having fun in your work out and not the scales, the rest will come naturally.

its easier to lose weight by eating less. it takes a long time to burn off calories

obviously eating less, and exercising is best

but exercising alone aint really gonna work in my opinion

Dont starve yourself and cut to mega low calories. If you starve yourself your body actually retains fat and stores anything you eat so therefor it is harder to loose weight. Each the recomended calories but all healthy food.

Do more cardio and less weights as its the cardio that burns the most calories.

And 2 weeks is to soon, weigh yourself and look at how much fitters and toned you are in about 2 months time.

I've been off work now for 3 months (im back on the 18th Feb) after a leg injury which prevented me from running etc...

I decided to turn to weights and bulk up - which i have. My weight has gone up by 2/3 pounds but i feel better for it.

I've said it once and i'll say it again: you cant judge people by their weight Confused

IF you've lost body fat (and you can see your lighter as your face is thinner and your clothes looser) then don't be so concerned. What your doing must be working. People are far to obsessed with scales and weight as opposed to their actual health and what their body looks like. If the fat is coming off and the muscles toning up you don;t need to rely on the scales.

900 cals a day is too low. I done this, posted on here somewhere a while ago. Lost 2 stone in a month. I was ill - Wont be doing it again.
Need to change your cals each day, your motab 'thinks' ahead. Thinks its getting 1500 cals a day, when infact you give it 1000 - then it will start to eat the fat.
If you do anyless, it will eat at the muscle.
This is what ive been told Thumbs Up

No, I did a 525 calorie a day diet last year. Went from 18st to 13st 4lb in 14 weeks.
