i went for the KR1 which i've ridden and it feels fast and if you want it as a bit of fun it seems a better option. ____________________ Past - CG125 ,KR1S, SV650s, Street Triple R - Current - Duke 390

The RGV has the same engine as an Aprilia RS250, so they're pretty much the same as far as reliability goes. Don't buy a 4-stroke, they have no soul! ____________________ www.bikepics.com/members/jackcheese <--- NOW FOR SALE! 51 Plate Cagiva Planet 125

I have absolutely no intention ever of buying a big bike for fun. Maybe for touring and big boring trips, but a little angry bee CANNOT be beaten for fun. |
that's why in your bikepics thing for the 125 you've said you want to put a far bigger engine in it? righto... |
"big" implying 600cc+
The engine im putting in now is a 350cc 2-stroke that weighs little more than my current engine. The reasons for fitting it are more power, similar handling and braking characteristics, and better reliability.
Now, can we lay all this off topic bickering to rest FFS! This guy just wants insight into the ownership of the NC30 and RS250 and advice on a fun/first track bike.
Personally, i prefer revvy engines. I don't like bland soulless engines. If i can't feel the engine coming into the powerband, it's not worth revving it IMHO. A 250 2-stroke can be reliable. If it's treated well, rebuilt when it should be then it'll be fine. parts for 250 2-strokes and 400s will be equally as expensive and hard to source. The key thing is that when something does go tits-up, its far easier to strip and rebuild a 2-stroke motor thanks to the lack of any mechanical valves (bar the powervalves).
I don't know what bikes you've ridden, but if you've never ridden a highly-strung 2-stroke, i'd say you definitely have to ride one before you decide what to buy.

I've owned both, VJ21 RGV for a year and VFR400 for over three years.
Imo the VFR is a much better all-round bike, a hell of a lot cheaper to run and more practical. The build quality is also more solid, although you can see in the rgv's build that it was just designed purely for performance.
My RGV wasn't unreliable, in fact it had 100% reliability until I ran it about 5k miles past it's recommended top end rebuild interval and it ate a piston. Can't blame it for that, but it's not ideally something to run on an impoverished student budget.
I think the RGV did teach me how to ride, one summer when I was 18 I used to go out doing 150 mile trips three times a week until it blew up just because it was so much fun. I don't think I ever exploited the RGV's supposedly better handling than the VFR and don't think I could on the road, though if you take it on track that's a different story.
Still though, the running costs are massive compared to the VFR when you take into account the two-strokes 25mpg, one litre of £10 oil every 200 miles and rebuilds which it will need if you don't want to blow it up.
Seeing as you already have the four stroke, the RGV may be the better option but tread very carefully, there's a lot of dogs out there. |
