I've just purchased a 19" widescreen Samsung LCD monitor. The resolution is 1440/900 I believe.

My question is: How well will this work for gaming? Specifically the wide-screen aspect. I'm mostly concerned with the compatibility of Half Life 2 and CS:S. If anyone's tried this combination I'd be very interested in hearing the results. Any other tips on wide-screen use would also be much appreciated as I've not known anyone else to have one thus far.

just make sure you select the correct aspect ratio and you'll be fine.

CS:S has the option for 16:10 so you will be OK.

Another thing... Most games that dont have a Widescreen resolution in-game can be altered to force Widescreen using a command on the shortcut Cool .

And what might that command be, if you don't mind my asking?

Well, for the game Battlefiled 2142 which doesnt have Widescreen in-game... The command is +widescreen 1 +szx 1680 +szy 1050 added on the end of the shortcut. Thumbs Up

Excellent. My max resolution will be 1440/900 so I'm assuming I'll swap your numbers for mine when I add it to the shortcut?

How well does the game work after this? Does the GUI format to fit the new screen layout or do they just kinda stay towards the center of the screen as if it were still 4:3?

Also, if anyone knows how use this trick to make CS:S automatically limit itsself to 25fps, I'd appreciate it. I used to use this on HL1 but either it's changed or I'm remembering it wrong.

"+exec fps_max 25"

Yeah, you should be able to just swap the numbers around and it should still work. Thumbs Up However, it might not work for all games i have only used this command thing on Battlefield 2142. Dont see why it wouldnt though. Thumbs Up

The games should work fine after using the command. Sometimes there are small problems with things looking a bit stretched or something but generally its all good.

As for CS:S, you can limit the framerate with max_fps 25 in-game using the console. If you activate the console under controls/advanced/Enable Dev Console you can use the ` key to enter it. Its the key next to the number 1 key and above the tab key. When the console is up just type in max_fps 25 or whatever you want to set it too. I think that should work.

It doesn't look like you're having any issues, but in case someone else is reading this and cannot force widescreen at the proper native resolution (1440x900 or whatever) they should try Powerstrip, available at download.com. Make sure you read the instructions, as it can be quite unfriendly to use for the non-technical. This will make sure you can use your screen to its fullest potential Smile

Btw I've played World Of Warcraft on my 40" LCD. Woooow thats just insane. The wife wasn't impressed tho, she was missing yet another repeat.

Thanks, Matt. I have to use fps_max in game every time I start it up for some reason. What I was hoping for was a more permanent solution. Karma

I got the monitor, by the way, and it works brilliantly. I'm loving having the super wide view in CS. Less people sneaking up on me, it seems. And the resolution is perfect. However, there's a dead pixel right in the middle of the screen. It's very distracting on white backgrounds. Anyone else experienced this? I'm thinking about returning the monitor because of it.

Nope, you won't get an exchange because of one dead pixel. There is a clause with all LCD based displays that a certain percentage of dead pixels is acceptable. Well, try it, but expect the worst.

Hmmm, If you havent managed to find a solution for Max_fps, i might have one. If it works Cool.

Open you're hard drive and find the steam folder. It should be something like C:/Program Files/Steam. Then in the steam folder find Steam/steamapps/yoursteamname/counter-strike source/cstrike/cfg. In this folder there should be a file called "config.cfg". Open this with notepad if it asks and then inside there at the end of all the existing stuff written, add you're max fps code. So for 25 frames, add max_fps 25 at the end of the the file. If I am right it should set that automatically everytime you load up. If you ever want to change it just go back into the file and change it or get rid. Thumbs Up

Hope this helps Very Happy . It should work Rolling Eyes .
