Excellent, thanks hedjehog, just what I was looking for I seem to find conflicting views about belt drives on the net, some people say that they are no use for high powered bikes but they do seem to be a good alternative to C&S, low maintainance and low cost.
However, I have overlooked the biggest problem in doing a conversion, which is how to get the belt to run through the braced swing arm I'm using Shame realy, I quite fancied the idea |

I can't do it on the bike I'm working on at the moment because of the aforementioned swing arm problem, but will definately look into it more next time. I rode shaft drive bikes for years, mainly European and have just gone back to a chain drive bike. I'd forgotten what an expensive pain in the arse it is. Esp with Kevlar belts getting to be a bit more affordable, can't believe kits for mid-sized sports bikes aren't more readily available. How wide is the belt on the Buell Any idea. |

For a mid-sized bike say 350 - 600 i would have thought half that would suffice. The Buell rear pulley looks a lot more like a sprocket then any other one I've seen. Once you have the outer rim, I would have thought you could just cut down the bikes sprocket to fit inside and weld it in, obviously it would have to be a bl**dy good weld. The centre of the belt should be where the centre of the chain was. Front pulleys are usualy about twice the width of the rear ones, so allignment shouldn't be too problematic. Finding a pulley that would fit your drive shaft might be a bit of a game. I wonder what the wear rate is like on bike pulleys/belts. It looks like the top brace on the Buell swing arm comes off. That's got me thinking again |

Hi
For life expectancy, think on the GPZ305 they were generally held to last ~15000, about same as a chain (with a similar replacement cost to a chain and sprocket kit, but more time to fit). But they also tended to suddenly fail (teeth coming off the belt).
Suspect it is torque that would kill them rather than power, so quite likely you are correct that a sports 600 could use a smaller belt. However I am surprised a belt that narrow (compared to a cam belt) can put up with that kind of torque in such a poor environment.
All the best

up to now ive done 6500 mile on my GPZ 305 belt
with no problems apart from the odd squeek when its wet but thats normal with a belt drive
biggest problem for belts .........is if you get a stone stuck it will rip through the belt
good point is you dont have to maintain it like a chain ____________________ my bike might be OLD,SLOW & RATTY
but its my ride
