PostPosted: 23:20 - 17 Feb 2007    Post subject: rusty NEW chain Reply with quote

hi,
could someone please tell me why my chain is rusty when its only 3weeks old?!
it was already oiled when i got it out the box, i greased it with some universal grease when i fitted it while the bike was off the floor and i have been putting WD40 on it every now and again.

even the couple of links i had to have cut off are just as rusty and i havent even bothered greasing that, was left in the garden untouched to die.

so why is the chain just as rusty as the few links that have been left to perish when the chain has been looked after??

cheers,
james

Don't use wd40 on it.

I presume it is kept in a damp environment?

Get some decent chain lube/wax.

As above..WD40 will wash off the grease and do more damage than good. Get a good quality chain lube and give it a coating. The side plates will go rusty if not lubed but it will only be surface rust.

sounds to me like the old chain didnt even need replacing.

Althought that "black and sticky shite" is simply your grease and dirt off the road mixed together, which grinds away at the chain and sprockets. too much of this and you will have to buy a whole new chain and sprocket set Thumbs Down

To avoid this, simply clean the chain, using WD40 and a toothbrush (preferably your little sisters) (lol)Thumbs Down until all the black goo is gone, and clean the sprockets with this too, getting rid of all the crap.

Then apply loads of grease to lubricate the chain (such as castrol chain wax)

Do this every week and it can prolong the life of your chan and sprockets.

Be ready with at least a whole newspaper under the chain, to catch the lovely dirty crap, and also dont let the WD40 go onto your tyres, as it will harden the rubber, (which is bad of corse)

And remember, as with everything in life, you get what you pay for.

Good luck cleaning that dude.

Dale

Don't use WD40 to lubricate anything, it isn't a lubricant, it's a solvent and will disolve and wash off any lube that's ohere in the first place.

I wouldnt buy castrol chain wax again to be honest. I thought it was crap. It just gets pushed to areas that have no wear leaving the areas with the most stress bare and its a bit overpriced at £6 a tin! Not only that its an absolute bitch to clean off...

Always lube after a ride not before as the hot/warm chain will let the lube run into the links. If yu do it when the chain is cold it will just sit on top and fly off when you use it.

personally id use anything that isnt wax based. Im using silicon based lube at the minute and it seems to work better for me.

Each to their own, but I have used Castrol chain wax for a year now, and I find it works very well. I clean the chain once a week then put the wax on. It goes transparent so the chain looks very clean and it doesn't "fling".

You should read up a bit on the different methods and you will find something that suits you (in terms of how much time you want to spend on it and how dirty you want to get) Smile Thumbs Up

The lube that came out best after tests by some of the magazines was Wurth Dry Lube, you can get in on ebay.

I'd use a scottoiler or a Loobman.

Chain wax and lube seems to attract dirt and make a grinding paste which knackers chains very easily.

Keep the chain clean and lube it with engine oil (via scottoiler or Loobman or similar) and It'll last a lot longer.

And don't say Scottoilers are too expensive, cos a Loobman is £20 or something.

Costs /at least/ £20 for a new chain...

Never use WD 40 on a chain, it can damage the o rings / x rings

I agree with MarJay.

Haven't got a scottoiler coz they are a bit expensive (wasn't aware of the Loobman so I'll have a look for one of those - thanks MarJay Thumbs Up ) but I find that applying engine oil sparingly with a paint brush on a clean chain is better than any of the spray on lubes I have ever tried (castrol, wurth etc). Just make sure you work it into the chain well (when the chain is warm / hot is definately best) to avoid it flinging off as soon as you ride. The last thing you want is lube of any kind all over your back tyre for obvious reasons.

I only use standard HD chains with no o-rings or x-rings so I use gunk and a tooth brush to clean the chain before I oil it - might not be a good plan to use gunk on x/o-ring chains though as I dont know how the gunk would affect the rubber.

Clean and lube once a week at least and all should be good.

3-in-1 chain oil (black aerosol can) with PTFE... halfords, about £3 a can... runs into every crack then coats everything with a light white sheen of silicon/teflon... works fine for me, takes about 20 seconds to apply a good coat (joys of a center stand) and generally needs doing once a month or so... also use it to give all stand springs etc a good covering.
