Ducati servicing costs how much !?!?!

Just got back from a bike dealers.

Was seriously considering chopping in the gix for a 2003 999 if I would have I would have only had to put up 3000.

It was a red one with loads of carbon fibre tarty bits.

But my first question was how much would the servicing be.

And the dealer said:

Minor is $400 Major is $700

I heard people said they were expensive but not that expensive.

if you really want a ducati wait and get a 1098 - servicing costs are less and half as often as the 999

other than that - get a manual and service your bike yourself

Eh, Eh, calm down, clam down. The bloke at BSD knows what he's talking about and actually said he's a Ducati nut and that he can't believe they have done it. He's not a magazine journo he's one of the top tuners in the country. It's a fact, the only 1098 demo bike in the UK had a frozen pulley that will lead to engine damage long before the next service interval. Bothers me not, I'm telling it as it's stated.

Oh and I wouldn't really expect an internal engine component to corrode anyway.

If it is the tensioner pulley wheel they they are plastic on loads of cars. They can fail, but the bearing is more likely to go and at that age probably from faulty manufacturing (or pressing the tensioner together incorrectly), and I would suspect would be just as disasterous on a steel pulley.

I believe it's more or less relative, like for like $ = £. The 1098 is supposed to be cheaper to service though, they have tried to bring the costs down and more inline with the Jap servicing costs. IMO it's a much better looking bike than the 749/999 but for me it's not something I'd be willing to pay over £11K for or £8k for that matter.

As you may have guessed I've not. For me they just don't appeal, I sort of rate them as the Harley of the sports bike world. I've got nothing against Italian bikes, I've had four Aprilias in my time and have considered a Mille, but Ducati just doesn't do it for me. I'd have an MV Augusta tomorrow if I could run it as a 2nd bike though.

As far as bike design goes I think the Italians used to be miles ahead of the Japanese but the gap has closed, there are some great looking Jap bikes around now and they have learned how to do colour schemes. I'd say it's vice a versa for engineering for the Italians too. But for me, as someone who needs to use a bike year round, buying Italian is like having two bullets in the gun when playing roulette. (There we go, a cliched analogy)
