Do you listen to music whilst riding? if you do, would you say you are visually extra observant as a result to compensate for not been able to hear traffic or does it/can it cause you to lose concentration?

Legally your allowed to have one headphone in, so occasionally i have music on, but quietly.

Can still hear my engine over it.

on motorway stints, either two earplug's or one sound isolating inner ear headphone, one earplug. Either way, all traffic noise is deadened off, and i leave the hold off the ipod so i can just tap my pocket to pause the tunes...........

The music tends to make me concerntrate for longer and harder, and most of the time i forget it is on, it just replaces the lovely sound of my engine, end can and the bloody wind.........( not my own of course ).

honestly though, after 20 mins at motorway speeds, how much attention do you pay to what you hear, i can't see how you'd get any extra clue's as to spacial awareness that arn't covered by all the visual work going on.......

When I was riding, I used one earplug for most of my journey's but the music was never so loud I couldn't hear the traffic/sirens.

Found I was slightly more observant, and for some reason I became quite lazy visually when I wasn't listening to music.

Been riding over a year to college with both earphones in. Not one problem at all. I have them loud enough to hear but Ican also hear other cars, etc. I wouldn't put it too loud as I wouldn't be able to hear anything.

Don't like listening to music when I'm riding, it distracts me.

I don't tend to for short trips, but do prefer to wear one earphone and just put my shuffle on - don't have it overly loud anyway and I can't say it distracts me - but then again i'm not on a rocket ship either.

Always have music or radio on in the car - seems weird driving without music in the background to be fair.

I tried at one time but never found a comfortable solution that was cheap. Tried the wrap arround the ear ones which bloody hurt, tried in ear ones which would fall out when putting the helmet on...

Not being able to hear traffic isn't as massive a safety issue as some people point out. How many accidents would of been caused if you could not of heard something?

The real safety issue however comes from being distracted, or if a pacey tune comes on you ride more aggressively etc..

Crashing into a ditch with your music still going isn't fun, certain to piss you off.

I'd be much too worried about the sensory deprivation. Also my bike has some idling problems, the best warning is listening to the engine.

I try and have both ear plugs in when i do occasionly listen to music, however by the time i put my lid on and done it up usually the plugs are pulled out of my ear and i spend the next 10 mins looking like a twat trying to adjust them so their atleast facing the right direction.

I find it doesnt make any difference to hearing sirens or my observations etc it just helps cut out the surrounding wind noise etc.

I want to try some of those flat speakers/headphones that go in the ear spaces in your lid. Only site i can find that sells them is american and im not sure i can trust it to be honest as the entire site contains three products Rolling Eyes

I would do but i love music to much and would just get carried away with the song and not pay enough attention to the road.

Nope, never had and never will. I find it distracting, plus I use earplugs and I enjoy listening to the bike. Smile

No it's not. Eh?

A similar thread was done recently:
https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=103850&highlight=earphones+riding

Same as I said on there, for long journeys I sometimes wear headphones, and it keeps my morale up.

As long as you don't feel it distracts you, I don't see anything wrong with it.

I listen to music whilst riding (both ears) and the same as when i drive the car it helps keep me being too bored.

I find that my koss cheap headphone also act like ear plugs

https://www.koss.com/koss/kossweb.nsf/p?openform&pc^eb^PLUG

This also means when i rip the helmet off and break them its not a fortune to replace. Unlike lots of other riders i see i use my mirrors allot and have never found my tunes to be a problem.
