Hey, had a K+N fitted about a year ago (also got it dynojetted) but done very few miles since then.
However its started getting a low range flat spot again, which might mean it just needs cleaning. However like i say, ive not rode in particularly dusty or smoggy conditions often, or done many miles...

But i remember people saying they need a piss load of cleaning. So, anyone care to elucidate on how often theres needed cleaning?

Reason i ask is because ill have to get the stuff in in advance, as K+N site said this;

Quote:
20. How do I know when to clean the filter?

The general rule of thumb is that the filter needs to be cleaned when the dirt build up gets as thick as the wire mesh. The usual interval is 30,000 - 50,000 miles depending on driving conditions. We recommend that you check your filter about once a year in normal usage.

21. Can I use anything other than K&N cleaner and oil?

We recommend that you only use K&N oil and cleaner. K&N air filter oil is a compound of mineral oil blended with special polymers to form a very efficient tack barrier. We have performed tests on numerous oil combinations and our blend has the required properties for maximum flow and filtration. Petroleum products such as transmission fluid and motor oil will soften and destroy the rubber sealing edges. Our cleaner is a non-detergent degreaser. Solvents and gasoline will harden the rubber seals causing the filter to distort (shrink). A mild detergent can be used in a pinch, but care should be taken to fully rinse it out. Rinsing detergent out of a filter is similar to getting soap out of a sponge; it’s not that easy to do. Always make sure the filter is completely dry before re-oiling.

And it also reckons i need to get some sealant too... Thinking

So, how much of this is micky mouse? Im looking to kickstart/G etc who perhaps know racing/tuning types who can tell whats bullshit.

I'd say it'd be absolutely fine after a year with few miles in normal circumstances.

But you've got nothing to lose by cleaning it.

Fleabay

Computer says £5 at least. Or a long wait for the kit to turn up if it turns out it is grubby and needs a clean.

What else could be causing it to bog down at the lower revs? Its just depressing as i spent like 200 quid getting it dynoed and it was smooth as a cashmere codpiece. Now...

Well lets say winter riding was fun lol.

So only things i can think of are;
Air filter.... Which has been dismissed
Exhaust ports being loose... but that would be obviously louder, and performance draining, and would be over the range.
Carb needles have unset themselves a bit.... Unlikely but possible, but expensive to find out
General crap and gunk in the carb housing.. but again, would affect all needles, unless its just blocking the low revs jet?

Hmm... Guess its a strip and prod exercise eh? Crying or Very sad
Any tips for what to look for? Do i need new gaskets for the carbs on an inline 4 if i just open em and wash em out? Is there any way that i can just flush out the float bowls and tank... never done it (probably should have by now)...

Don't really need gaskets unless the float bowl gaskets get mullered when you take the bowls off.

A flat spot could be dirty carbs, dirty air filter, could be anything sadly.

Don't be such a girl, just wash the filters in petrol or summat.

The pipercross foam washable filter I have I believe is supposed to be washed every 4000 miles, although I do it more like every 8000.

Hi

Given you have used it very little I would be tempted to say things have got gummed up with stale evaporating fuel. Lob a bottle of a decent fuel additive for cleaning the system up into the tank and give it a couple of decent runs, and see if the problem persists.

Also, possibly being cold at the moment compared to when it was jetted it will have leaned the mixture off a bit. Bandit was a pain in winter when the engine was cold compared to summer running.

All the best

Keith

I hadnt thought of fuel additive. Good plan my son. Both cheap (ish) AND easy. A plan with no drawbacks Razz

(plus it usually makes bikes backfire)

And you're right it could have just been winter, but i was noticing end of summer it was getting worse, but by then it had been sitting a good few months...

I'll have a look at draining the float bowls as well (might as well assuming it doesnt involve too much agro) and Gaz the 'petrol or summit' is the concerning part in your advice Wink
Since i spent 50 quid on the filter id rather not completely fuck it up to save a fiver.

Hi

The stuff that has been recommended to me a few times is Forti fuel additive, apparently common in Land Rover dealers.

All the best

I personally think they are a rip, they cost £40 and then you don't have a clue if they are dirty.

I've noticed zero improvement since fitting and recently went back to a paper one.

At least I can tell when its dirty or if there is another problem. Plus when I did enquire the cleaning solution was dearer than a paper filter.
