Hi, the CBR (1996) rear shock is getting abit dodgy, anyone know any good but cheap aftermarket shocks?

Just looking for middle range 50-100 quid shock, second hand is fine.

I figured you racing types would know as the cbr's raced a hell of a lot.

Very good idea, what i might do is buy a cheapo replacement shock off egay and get that rebuilt, or maybe do it myself in my own sweet time.

Any good sites? links? Ideas of price?

Rear shocks cannot be rebuilt at home due to the need for specialist equipment for repressurising the nitrogen.

If it has a remote reservoir then it can be rebuilt. If it has a piggyback reservoir then it may not be rebuildable.

Hi

Hagon are about the cheapest decent quality shock available.

Plenty of shocks can be rebuilt, even the ones not designed to be. However it is not a job to be done at home.

Emailed, at worst i look a twonk.

Its just annoying cos i KNOW my shock is spongy, and it affects my cornering confidence. But i dont trust buying random new ones off ebay to be any better then my current one. After all my shock is the same fitted from 1990-96, ie mine is the most current im going to get second hand.

Ok well failing that, how much would it cost to get it all set up properly, ie get the settings tweaked by someone who knows what they're doing? Make the most of what i have? Im going to have a go changing suspension oil and maybe springs... dont know if that would be worth the downtime. But then i recently had the fork seals replaced so id imagine the oil would have been changed too...

... but then again it was colin collins under warranty Thinking

True, but i tried doing that the first time and thats kinda what busted my settings. I'll try and set up the forks i guess. Far as i know ive set up the back hard as possible and its still too spongy for my fat arse.

Can anyone tell me if they do swap oil when changing fork seals, and if its time rather then use that does em? As it was 2 years ago but only 4k at worst.

It would be extremely hard *not* to change the oil when changing the seals, as you have to pump all of the old oil out before you can remove the seals. It usually goes all gloopy and would be hard to put back in there.

It does sound to me like you need a new rear shock. If you've followed the instructions in the PDF correctly, then your bike should be set up for your weight. If your bike still handles like poo, then you either need to ignore it, buy a new shock or get yours rebuilt. If a hagon is too expensive, then ebay is a good bet.

The trouble with 150mph sportsbikes is, they can cost a lot to run!


{edit} you do need to have followed all the steps in the guide though, not just ignored bits cos you want the suspension 'harder'. Harder isn't necessarily better... but I'm fairly sure you've done this and actually your shock is knackered! {edit}

Hmm see that was the part that always foxed me. I can roll it all the way undone or something like that, but theres no mention in haynes of standard settings.

Like i say i dont get back until easter, but ill have a proper go at it this time.

Rolling it all undone isn't returning it to standard.

Look up the stock settings somewhere, either on the net or there is bound to be something in the Haynes.

Once its back to stock I reckon it'll feel OK.

No i meant i thought most setup guides started from fully unwound on everything. Mine is just fiddled with by ear, hence the problem.

But ive had several people fiddle with the rear and it doesnt seem to make any odds.

No no no.

This isn't that sort of 'setup guide'. The PB setup guides are lists of how the suspension was set when it felt best /for the test rider/.

This setup guide starts from the baseline of stock settings and adjusts the bike to suit your weight and riding style. Its worth a go, it really is.

It was at a trackday, but that's the best place to do it - you can go out and ride it, give feedback, make changes...

Technically nothing to stop you just showing up and using his services and taking it out on the road to test though, I suppose.

Oh, that might be a plan. Wonder when the next anglesey track day is...

Are there other people that do this kind of service at trackdays too? Or will i have to try and find one hes visiting.
