Seen a nice one ('95) parked next to an NC30 in a dealers , priced 200 more , 29K on the clocks ,full history T+T, tempted

what are their vices other than the usual honda rectifyer problems? , and an old man image problem and probably extortionate insurance.

any thoughts?

The old man image problem is because they weigh more than 200kg dry and only make about 95bhp.

That said, a well looked after example will be comfy, reliable, stable and quick enough for you. The main issue is that it is seven years old. Insurance will probably be about the same or perhaps less than for the '30.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

A friend of mine has a stage one tune and a full remus system.
Although it sounds lovely, it does just over a 13 sec quarter mile Surprised

A few of them have been dispatched on so look for marks from throw over panniers and the like.

They are solid engines though.

well my NTV650 weighs 215 wet , has 53bhp and I can waste many riders on it , give me double the bhp (nearly) , twin brakes so I can brake later, and 2 more cylinders, and a chain drive , and fairing and I think I'll waste a few riders yet,

erm can you give some other 1/4 mile times to make me see if this is impressive or not? , net searches say subaru imprezas get 13.6

some quick searching got:

2004 times from

https://www.sportrider.com/features/146_0406_2004_literbikes_strip/

all seem to be around 9.9 seconds with the blade the slowest(!?)

but what against my primary opposition? 600SS, 636s , CBRs , hornets fazers , SVs etc?

A stock ZZR1400 will dip into the 9 secs mark with a decent rider.

In a nutshell - nowt.
That's nothing, if you're posh.

The VFR750 was the benchmark sports tourer. The only thing better was the VFR800. Even now it hasn't slipped that much against newer machinery.

Insurance isn't that much of a deal breaker. As with any bike depends on location and storage. Alarm, approved type, helps too (again, same with any bike).

IMO old man image not a problem on the road. I wasn't aware it had one until reading posts on here. Now BMWs, that's a different pipe and slippers story Very Happy. In fact I'd rather have the big VFR with its ability to do loadsa miles and then be able to take the panniers off and play sporty.

HTH Thumbs Up

I was just basing the time against my Kwak, 13.something everytime is pretty slow.
But then round twisties the VFR can keep up Thumbs Up

Nah, the 750 hasn't been beaten by its later incarnations.

Anything wrong with it?

Erm, apparently could do with a bigger engine to compete with modern day tackle. Could be a little lighter (main reason I don't own one). V4's a bit fiddly to work on.

I do wonder why big VFRs are so heavy , the VFR800I has an alley frame and is still heavier than the 750 , sure the single swing arm adds weight but the Bros 650 has a single swinger and is a helluva lot lighter.

I'm used to weight though I ridden plenty of rats.

Vfrs are probably heavy because they are over engineered.
They're built to a high quality and they are built to last.
I ran one for 3 years, Not the most exciting bike in the world, but it would sit at 100+ all day long, it did 45mpg, will do nearly 200 miles on a tank and could hit 150 if needed.
Its not a sports bike, but then it was never meant to be.
I'd have another tomorrow.

Forgot about that bit.
I found the actual engine isn't that bad. It's all the faff about removing the plastics, without breaking it, and what to loosen so you can get at other bits (the radiator is a good one).

I don't actually mind working on my 1/2 scale version - everything just nicely fits together - like everything's been designed around eachother rather than just bolted on. Fitting carbs, exhausts, etc can be tricky though, two sets of heads to set up/maintain - can understand why people might be a little put off, but the things are so mechanically reliable that they seem to shrug off everyday abuse.

The weight of the thing put me off a little as I'm not the largest of riders, I have heard they carry their weight very well though. Not the flightiest/quickest turning of bikes, but as mentioned, that's missing the point of them.

I'd have one once I get tired/old/too fat for half-sized sports reps.

UPDATED with pics

Went to have a look at a VFR750 today , as the original I looked at had been swiped
and had long gone , grr

However lucky enough there was another one nearby, in Silver I'd like red but what the
hey?

here are some pics turned out to be a CAT D the body work was perfect though the frame was unbent ,
, the forks were straight if a little pitted at the top (not on the stanchions) , and the brakes were ok , with
plenty of meat left on the pads tyres etc, with just rust on bolts were and there,

however looking closer the pipe work looked like the pictures below,

Has Scotoiler , 1MT+T , 24K on clocks, R&Gs , and imobi + alarm

worth £1600?, or wayy too cheap and therefore asking for trouble (pre haggle btw)

From that it seems that Bike magazine tested it at 11.6 seconds @ 117mph.

All the best

If the rear downpipes rot then its an engine out job to replace em so make sure they're ok. rear shocks have been known to expire at 20k so look at that as well.

being shilled on it, not buying it , considering just repairing the NTV for tour if I can fix it, , then getting something else later on.

say don't forget to add yourself to the BCF spills list.

You don't need to drop the engine to change the exhaust on an NC30, is the 750 much different??

the problem isn't so much changing them but the cost ! , a new stainless system for a VFR750 is close to £420 , and that doesn't include gaskets , and the damage I will do to my furniture when something doesn't go right.

Problems with the VFR -

1 - Rectifier (as noted) - The replacement i got from David Silvers is still working 2 years later though.
2 - Exhaust - Mine is rustier that the one in your pic itchy, and isn't blowing yet, but when it goes it IS gonna cost big time.
3 - Brakes arent up to modern standards, but in good nick, they do the job just fine. I've been told you can replace the fork legs and calipers with firestorm ones, but i haven't tried that yet.
4 - Can be a bit of a pain to work on, due to the complexity of the engine and exhaust setup, and the bodywork is very solid but a pain to remove.
5 - Speedo - Runs off a sensor near the front sprocket. Mine stopped working for a while, but i gave it a bit of a clean and its been fine again for ages. But i priced up the sensor, think it was about £70 Shocked . Parts prices can definately be a bit steep.

Zen Dog

I always thought insurance was pretty cheap, certainly not in sportsbike territory.

It wont do that, and the VFR in question was actually the old 800.
You'd have to scream that thing to get inside 11 seconds.
