whats a reasonable distance / time to travel comfortably in a day?

Also what the rough tank range for a T reg Bandit 600? I've never let it go past about 110 miles for fear of it conking out on the way to work Very Happy

The highest mileage I've seen on a tank with my Bandit (1996 P plate) was 172 miles. Not completely empty - but pretty darn close!

Did a total of 350 miles that day on a mixture of A + B roads (with pillion). I wouldn't want to go much further in one day. But maybe your arse is tougher than mine Embarassed

The most I've ever done in a day is about 450 miles, but that was a straight motorway slog and not exactly fun.

If you're on a touring holiday and you want to ride good roads, I think 250 miles (300 at most) is more realistic, taking A & B roads and giving you time to stop and see the places you pass.

Did 500 miles in a days work, was hard work, was more exhausted than arse-ache though. But I guess I was stopping at sites for a bit.

It all depends on your stamina, and obviously your pace, if you keep hitting rough roads, don't expect long distances, but if you're on about straight motorway, just tuck in and cruise it in the 'fast lane'.

Most I have seen out of my Bandit was 162 miles and that was only to reserve, could easily get 180 miles out of a tank.

On the first day of the Scotland tour, gonna do about 300 miles, all motorway though. Smile

It all depends on your bike though, doesn't it.

I can do 500 miles in a day on my Wing, I've done it over europe.
Much over that though my bum is really not happy!

Anyone who does anything over a couple of hundred miles in a day on any bike other than a big sports tourer or dedicated tourer has my utmost respect, and I can give recomendations for hemeroid cream!

Best way to find out your tank range:
Strap a 5l jerry thingy on your back seat with some petrol in, and ride till you run out! Then you know your range but still have petrol to get back with!

I could probably do about 500-700 miles in a day on my CBR6FSport if it was mostly motorway, thats with plenty of stops tho! Have gotten used to doing long miles really, im only 20 and i'v probably done near to 40,000 miles on bikes already!

I've topped out at just over 600 miles in a day. Twice! Brick Wall

It's too much for a single day and the only reason I did it was because I HAD to be where I was going in the single day.

If I was doing that amount of more I'd break it up.

As said before, you'll only want to manage between 200 and 300 miles if you want to actually stop at any point and see anything other than the tarmac or have something to eat. Especially if you're travelling in the UK.

If you're going abroad, maybe a few more miles are do-able because of the less traffic. Neutral

When going abroad, I usually do a really long day, maybe 14hrs on the go (800 to 1000 miles), to get to where I'm going in one and then no more than 200 a day, unless it's somewhere like the Alps and then you'll struggle to cover more than 150 in an 8hr day of riding around the twisties, and that wouldn't leave you much time for sightseeing either!!

Best I've done in 24 hours was 2 legs, one of 784 km ..10 hours
then 2 hours soaking up heaps of coffee, then, .. 652 km in 8 hours, .. mind you, thats here in Oz where the roads go on forever.and then some. 100 + most of the way, apart from having to slow down for towns and the odd cop.

Did 1000 miles in one day on a TLR, 500 Miles the day before. TLR just seemed to fit me well, by far the most comfortable sports bike and i think the v-twin feels more relaxed. Just bought a GSF1250 and looking forward to doing some long rides on this bike but will have to sort the seat, it is the worst I have had on a bike, sure hope it breaks in soon....

I personally stick to the following for groups...

Long Distance: (400 miles)
Expect an average speed of 50 mph for motorways (inc. petrol stops, lunch etc). Do not plan days of more than 8 hours riding.

Normal Distance: (240 miles)
Expect an average of 40mph on normal (interesting) roads. Do not plan for more than 6 hours riding. This should give you time to stop and enjoy the scenery.

Leave rest days for people to enjoy whatever they fancy. I tend to plan a couple of days getting there and a couple getting back for a 2 week holiday. If everyone feels adventurous, I would have 2 destinations with a days ride between instead of 1 place to aim for.

If you are alone, then decide what your goals are. I will happily do a couple thousand mile days to get somewhere. I then tend to stick to < 300 mile days to look around and enjoy some nice roads.

If you are in a country where the road network is not particularly good (Russia, Eastern Europe etc) then I'd expect even less - say max of 200 miles per day.

I manage comfortably 500-700miles a day depending on weather conditions. Thats 3 or 4 fuel stops, and on normal roads.

On motorways, easily 1000 miles +. Best i've done was Rorschach in Switzerland, to Carcasonne southern France, via Dijon in about 12 hours. Good weather, nice roads and lots of garages.

But then I do ride a GS now, with 200+ tank range, good weather protection, heated grips etc etc.

on nice twisty roads where you have to concentrate,

for me 300 miles is fun, with enough breaks

but 400 miles is a bit much for me.

Id prefer not to be burning petrol if im not enjoying it

and ideal fun blast for me is 130miles

440 miles a day once for me.
220 mile:nagoya to tokyo at early morning, no congestion, fine weather, could cruise at 70-80, was piece of cake.
220 mile:tokyo to nagoya at evening, bad congestion with car accidents, heavy rain, I was riding with a typhoon, no where to hide but some service areas, I got drenched and was exhausted on a return journey.
Same distance, same course. But they were so different. Bad experience.
