Does anyone know how a central heating thermostat works?
Are they essentially a thermometer with a big relay on the other end?

If so, would it be simple to wire one into control an electric radiator?

I believe in their most simple form they are a bi-metallic switch where you adjust the tension before they break the circuit depending on the temperature (correct me if I'm wrong). New thermostats will most probably be electronically controlled by a thermistor or IC with a triac or relay output. although they may still use the mechanical switching method, hth.

Under no circumstances should you use a central heating thermostat (room stat) to control an electric heater. A roomstat is only designed to switch low current loads an elctric heater wil be at least 2 Kw and will need switching contacts capable of handling at least 10amps, to be safe I would noe use anything less than 15amp switching.

My electric heater draws around 600-700w on the setting I use it on.
However, point taken, ta.

I wonder if I could wire up a bigger relay to the thermostat Thinking.

Cool; just what I was looking for.

Had tried google, but not with 'thermostatic', which seems to have been my downfall.

Ta Thumbs Up.
