If TobyR can ask:

I asked this in the touring section but didn't get half the number of replies as Toby did
and his question was for a short 170 mile trip which isn't that much , with my max
miles in one day around 900.

I've a similar question

L reg NTV650 FSH , 63K

There are NO problems with this bike other than an old battery , and old sparks which
will be replaced before I go, shaft drive , damage is only cosmetic , but this bike scares the
crap out of Johnny GSX-R, though the issues he had with it have been long fixed (Ive actually
gone through 2 sets of bars , one was wayy too low and flat, this one is fine). Shaft drive
so no chain to worry about, gear box is ok. And it is maintained ok , its just it looks awful.

I've no problems with miles either and my navigation technique is called maps a compass
and dead reckoning.

the task at hand? , Monaco! , South of France next month 2800 miles round trip (maybe more),
anything to worry about? , the only thing that is on my mind is maybe clutch life but a courier says
he gets 100K out of each clutch.

The leccy problem was solved after angle grinding the rear rack off , and finding some corroded
wires which were quickly replaced.

Anythoughts?

(there are NO rider issues other than a tendancy to overanalyse things such as now) and my dad keeps planting seeds of doubts in me, but he thinks a car with 20K on it is high mileage!.

Thanks

note break down cover will be purchased before I leave.

Stop thinking, buy breakdown cover and go, live a little!

The fact toby even posted for a 170 mile journey is laughable, I'd do that distance without a second thought.

At the end of the day if your bike does decide to blow up you phone break down and go home, better that than not trying at all.

Hi Shaun maybe some people aren't as experienced as you.

Go for it.

I did four months around Europe with no breakdown cover at all.

I had the bike serviced abroad and new tyre, front brake pads fitted. Many people in Europe speak English and I found the bike repair/dealers I went to in Europe very helpful. You can always make yourself understood. I got my bike serviced in Spain with only a basic phrasebook and a Spanish mechanic who could only speak a few words in English.

Don't try to get any work done in Monaco as it is very expensive. I went into a bike dealers in Niece and they wanted £90 just to put in a set of front brake pads!

And i thought that JonB was bad enough! Laughing

Itchy, i'm sure your bike will be fine. I recommend taking some slime with you just in case you get a puncture or put it in before puncturing. I know people would disapprove of the use of slime, but i've had it in my bike for 500 miles since i got a very small puncture that couldn't be plugged because of the angle of penetration and it has been fine since.

If you are going france, just don't use the peage, the suck! And try to avoid Paris at all costs, cos IT sucks too. If i had the time and money, i'd love to go to france this summer (but bloody have to sort out fucking tourist visa! GRRR)

Yeah but which would you regret more, failing and spending a few hours by the side of the road then getting a lift home or never trying when you had the chance?

A few checks before you leave and don't be reckless/stupid you'll be ok.
As for Monaco then why not. However, remember it's the journey that's important, not the destination. With that in mind make sure you plan to come back a different route to what you use to get there.

As I said in Toby's thread, get on your bike and enjoy. There will be time(s) in your life when for one reason or another you can't. Then it's no use wishing you had, better to remember you did.

HTH Thumbs Up

Erm yes!

Make sure that your breakdown cover (and insurance) covers you in Europe.

Wrap your clothes and anything else you want to staty dry in black binliners and go.

Oh, yeh. Take a roll of gaffatape with you!

Life is not a rehersal!

Will you or won't you? You seem to quander over every little thing!

I don't think you'll end up going but I hope I'm wrong!

As for the bike itself, seems fine although I'd want something with more cc myself.

As said, get on and go.

I do it every day and clock up 200 miles.

I sugest you buy a reliable bike, that's if you can make that sort of decision.

Its better to regret something you have done than regret something you haven't done. Face it, it would be a hell of a tale to tell to your mates in the pub. Thumbs Up
