Hi all,
My mrs brought an ER-5 the other day for when she passes her test.

It started in the guys garage (he hadn't warmed it up, I checked)

But when I got it home it wouldnt start very well at all, took ages to fire up so I changed the plugs and filled the tank up, just to make sure, but still no look.

It'll start after a while and be fine for about a minute after turning it off but after that it'll take ages to start. Confused

Gonna do an oil change in a few days but dont know how much difference that'll make.

Cheers for any help Thumbs Up

Essentially two things are the cause of poor starting and running one is a lack of sparks the other a lack of fuel.
If you have decent sparks happening at the right time then you should look at the carbs the most likely cause will be a blocked jet so a strip and clean will be in order.

Can someone just inform me of the best way to clean carbs please?

The only experience Ive had with them is when Ive restricted my old ZZR600, which just involved loosening the jubille clips to pull the carbs off, I didnt completely dissconnect the carbs when I did that.

Cheers
Chris

When I was on an ER5 on my DAS they seemed to be a bitch to start anyways, very tricky when trying to start with any kind of throttle, more timing than anything.

some bikes can be a bitch to start if your not used to them

i picked up two bikes from my mates in winchester the other week i couldnt start one of them he came across put a bit of choke on hit the starter and it went first go

what im saying is some bikes have to be started different to others some with choke some without some with a little throttle etc etc

hope that helps Confused

Generally with my ER5 I find the technique is full choke, no throttle and hold the starter. Should start pretty quick. Since I popped some Iridium plugs in mine it starts on the button.

Check the battery voltage - they seem to put a good load on the battery so a slightly low charge can make all the difference.
