 |
|
I went over Snake Pass today for a bit of a hoon, but as usual there were the Sunday Driver brigade out doing the breakneck speed of 25mph (it's a blanket 50 ).
Now, does anyone on here actually know anyone who drives like this, and do they have a reason for it? They create a massive queue behind them and never think to let people pass them. They only seem to drive like this on twisties though, as once they're into residential areas they're quite happy to break 30 and 40 limits! These drivers really do wind me up. Fair enough if they're carrying a live animal or a bootful of C4, but I highly doubt this is the case for every Sunday driver.
There's a 3-mile NSL single carriageway which I use to get to Uni and work every day, and ONCE since September I've been able to do 60mph all the way. It's not particularly twisty yet these people feel the need to do 30-40mph down even the straights! Thing is, when they get to the 30 limit at the end they keep on doing 40! . I have no trouble doing 60 on this road in my 1litre Fiesta.

You're on a bike, its not really difficult to overtake is it if a car is holding you up? |

Fair play mate, did'nt realise that (and no I've never been on it ).
Best time of the day for doing roads like that are early morning whilst they still in bed. Is a pain in the arse getting up early but worth it. |

Yeah I agree, partly my fault for out out mid-afternoon
Here's a link to the video --> Clicky. Watch it from 8:30, the traffic they get stuck behind is actually very light and it still takes them a while to get past. |

Id agree. On a rideout yesterday, just on the way to the bike cafe, i had to leap frog 5 cars held up by 20mph car on slightly bendy NSL roads.
But for me the daft bit was someone holding up 8 cars on a fast NSL road with clear visibility.
However it did give me good opportunity to practice my overtaking at speeds lower than you would normally have to do on those sort of roads.
There were then one or two similar situations in wales.
In particular on the way back, on the road from welshpool to shrewsbury, there was a 40 car tailback for one of these 40mph in a nsl individuals.
Fortunately, I met them when the road straightened out into a very long straight, with very little oncoming traffic so I cleared the lot quite quickly even though I dont normally overtake in the dark.
If I was in/on a vehicle which could accelerate that well, I would have found it a lot more annoying though.
I think its people who only usually drive in 30zones, and just arent willing to change their driving style for the conditions.
I think if i were holding up 10 cars, id be inclined to pull over to let them pass. I know that some caravan owners do this, and i think its to be commended. ____________________ colin1 is officially faster than god |

Reading further,
the trick to Snake pass is to go there early or in winter when it is abandoned, night is also excellent
to hit Snake pass, but risky however. Watch out for small furry animals , if you are brave take Strines
Moor at night thats proper scary.
Anyway, if you have to hit the snake mid day , stick near the start and try wait it out, ok more sunday
drivers may have passed, but when I turn round at Strines and wait quite often you'll get a clear gap
to hit it as hard as you want. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will. In the end, your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching. |

I did want to have a ride over snakes pass.....but I think I will give it a miss now that I have seen that vid, road looks ok but too many restrictions. Looks like on a bad run you are spending all your time just trying to make small amounts of headway.

Beauty spot type roads are best avoided on Sundays.
They might have gran in the back who gets scared at 40mph
Best to just take it in your stride and pass when you can, they are enjoying a day out - enjoy yours and don't get wound up.
Some people like to slow down and take in the scenery - nothing wrong with that - some bikers even do it too |

Some people on a sunday drive out have no idea that other road users are even behind them, and a lot probably wouldn't care if they did. They would probably shout "young hooligans"at people in their rear view mirrors.
Best just to get past them when safe, and admire the scenery (which is one reason you're there) when you have to sit behind them.

Being an occasional caravan tower, I do keep an eye on the queue behind, although I often find people drive slower than me, so I try to leave a gap in front of me for overtakers to slip in to. Once I was hammering it down a country road with kids in the car and caravan in tow, and a car driver behind kept trying to pass at stupid places. I pulled over as soon as I had chance, he passed, I rejoined and soon caught him up. He ended up slowing me down! I guessed he was doing it on purpose, so I returned the favour by pretending I was looking for an overtaking opportunity! ____________________ Currently Moto Guzzi 750 Strada, Moto Guzzi V35 Florida, previously Honda CB125T, RD250LC, RD80MX |
