It's really pissing me off lately! I've just bought a new bike - pics and thread to follow - and people at work moan about me talking about it.

It may not be everyone's passion, I know. But surely a brand spanking new sportbike is more interesting than:

"How are you"
"Good. How was your weekend?"
"Good. Me and Gary went to the pub."
"That's great!"
"And Gary almost spilt his pint!!!"
"What about you Mark?"
"I bought a brand spanking new bike and the dry roads were a godsend......"
"...oh please, do stop talking about your bike"

I'm sure the pint spilling incident was more exciting. Middle Finger Rolling Eyes Middle Finger

dunno why but this was lodged in my brain meats..

A fun thing to try is to make up facts about them to see if there paying attention..

Arrow My bike runs on unleaded beef
Arrow It has a 3stroke engine
Arrow It as designed by Jimmy Saville when he still was alive
Arrow The brakes are woven from pubic hair
Arrow If you ride fast enough it will impregnate an otter in germany

That sort of thing..

Actually, my non-biking friends are quite interested when I talk about my bike and biking in general. Even though they have no intention themselves of getting into motorcycling. I guess I have good friends!

i get this a lot. Another example is when a bike goes past and someone (knowing you like bikes) says:
Them: "ooo what bike is that"
Me: "well thats a ....... with .....engine producing roughly....bhp, an interesting fact about that bike is......."
Them: Neutral

This happend eariler when out with the GF walking her dog Rolling Eyes

It gets really annoying as non of my friends (apart from the ones i made though bikes) have any remote interest in bikes.

Nah not a problem at all. Maybe because I barely have any non-biking friends any more. Laughing

I do it on purpose, just because people get annoyed. Someone mentions R6 and I launch into a discussion about midrange power and 0-60 times, and they just stand there with it all bouncing off their skull, 'tis great fun. Wink

I'm the one that usually gets sick and tired about talking about bikes because to all my mates, i'm instantly associated with bikes, but i've other equally interesting things to talk about such as guitars and stuff. Having said that, chatting about bikes seems less boring than rambling about scales and arpeggios; 150mph undertakes and 3rd gear wheelies seem to get interest. I think the only people to notice are my folks. Everytime i e-mail them, they're always saying "are motorbikes all you think about? What about your studies and work placements? Shocked

Now that i've joined the big boy club after moving onto a 600, people seem to take me more seriously and i often get asked questions etc by randoms at campus whenever i park near the union (they'd often hear me from a mile off before seeing me). In fact i'm spreading the biking bug to my mates as they're all asking about CBT & DAS etc so it's cool. Rolling Eyes

Mark, this thread is so true.
It does seem to be jealously, although it could just be ignorance.

Like when you overtake lots of cars then have to come to a standstill, and the cars catch up, they will say "ha!, where did that get him eh?" and I say: "exactly the same place as you, but tell me, who had more fun?"

My best mate has put up with me talking about bikes non stop for the past 3/4 months so when she complains I don't get too annoyed Razz
I find it more annoying when people ask questions acting all interested even though when I give them an answer I may aswell be talking gibberish. Rolling Eyes
Eg :- girl in work asked me today what kind of bike do I have, I told her and she said 'I have no idea what that means!'
She knew and I knew that she would not understand the answer yet she still asked the question... and gave me the look (the one that makes you feel like your from a different planet than the other person). Confused
It's not the questions I mind just the false interest, if you get me Razz

My girlfriend recently sat and watched me rebuild the engine on my Jawa, accompanied by a monologue of how each bit works and she is still speaking to me Shocked .

You must use the boredom. My mate Phil maintains that being an anorack is the perfect way to get rid of the police. As soon as they mention anything that sounds like a question about the bike, immediately launch into a barrage of useless fact and figures including the historical origins of the factory the bike came from and the differences between say a K1 and a K2. Keep going until you see their eyes glaze. They wont be able to get rid of you fast enough.

Phil is always being stopped on his Trials BSA B40. It has an exhaust fit to wake the dead, nae lights, knobbly tyres and a numberplate tip-exed onto the back mudguard. The coppers never get further than "So that's road legal is it then?".

They usually bugger off after I say the make of the bike, wouldn't be able to go as far as the history of it Laughing
It's quite fun in the way their all impressed it's a motorbike and don't realise that it's just an ickle 125, and that on a scale of motorbikes it's pretty much at the bottom Razz
One woman even said now don't go speeding on that bike of yours once you do your test thing! Laughing

My constant yabbering at work about bikes (even though I haven't ridden one in months) has actually had a positive effect. A few co-workers actually admit to looking out for bikes on their commute, and one particular colleague's now thinking of learning to ride.

Not necessarily moan but you can tell when there not interested (eyes glaze over).

I'm trying to annoy people at work by talking about bikes and theres only 5 of us. There are two topics they will talk about and thats what we are doing in work Rolling Eyes and food.

They will not stop talking about food and the different ways of cooking. oh that and weight loss, thank God I have an hour lunch I usually bugger off somewhere on the bike.

I sit next to a total top hat every day at work.

Every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday I have to sit through seven hours of feckin snooker stories!
"How well / poorly he played the night before"
"The usual arguments about the scoring from the previous night"
"The up coming weekend away to Sheffield to watch the snooker"
Blah blah bloody blah Mad

The moment I start talking to one of the other riders at work about bikes or the weekends racing, the amature dramatics start with the puffy voice:
"Oh, look at me and my lovely bike"
"Aren't bikes wonderful......... I wish I could marry my bike"
"Bikes, bikes, bikes oh how I love bikes"

Wouldn't mind but I'm not even talking to him, he's just butting in!

Bear in mind he's 41 and lives at home with his mom and dad Rolling Eyes

The lads can sit at work and discuss at great length their cars, how fast they are so on and so forth but you can never mention bikes or there'll be a boredom based murder. Just tend to listen about their 19K ford focus that does 0-60 in 6 seconds the rest of it.

The worst bit is when someone is genuinely intersted and asks you questions and you think 'do i tell him the long version or the short version' Short version will get a nod, long version will get comedy snores from everyone else.

But we have our own little biker group that we use to turn the tables on the car drivers when we get the chance, so its not that bad!! Thumbs Up

The peeps at work all seem fairly interested to hear how I'm gettin on, though I don't think I over-do it. I've been wafflin' on about getting one since I started there two and half years ago, but they all thought it was pie in the sky. Then I found what I wanted on Ebay and sent a picture round in an email and they were all oo'in an coo'in (they don't know much about bikes) and gettin all excited. And then when I rode it into work for the first time, I had to make about a dozen return trips to the car park with people wantin to see what I'd got. They all grin when they see me striding past in the morning with helmet-hair and rosy cheeks, and I bet half of em wouldn't say no to a spin round the car park!

Hmm, my boss asks me every Monday if I've been out on my bike at the weekend and if so, where I went. He also tells all our new joiners within minutes of how three of his team, all women, ride bikes. And, he can name all our bikes. Not bad for a Porsche-driver. Thumbs Up

I just talk about bikes to upset all the guys in the office - ' my car does 0-60 in 6.2 secs - really? I get an indicated 70 mph - then have to change into 2nd...' This time of year, being into bikes also gives me something to bore them with when they bore me about football - ' did you see the game on Saturday? No - did you watch the GP on Sunday?'
