Hi all, my first time here. I hope you can help me with this question:

I have the option to get a learner restricted Kawasaki ER5 to replace my Honda City Fly with a view to derestricting when I pass my test in the next few weeks (hopefully!).

I'm 17st, and the City Fly struggles to get above 60mph, which means commuting on a dual carriage A road is not very nice!

Will a restricted ER5 actually perform any better, and allow me to get to 70mph+? I have had 2 days on an unrestricted ER5 with an instructor, how will the restriction affect the performance of the bike?

Also, what would you say a 2001 Y reg with 9000 miles would be worth?

Many thanks,

Mark

The City Fly is a 125 so would be putting out somewhere between 11 and 14bhp

Restricted for a class A1 licence the ER5 will be belting out around 30 bhp. I've had my 28bhp machine up to 120km/h

The ER-5, GPZ500s and CB500 all seem to take the 33bhp restriction really well.

If you have been doing the same as I did on my DAS then I only actually found the powerband on it taking it back to the School after my pass Twisted Evil so I doubt you'd notice much difference.

If I am understanding you correctly you are on a CBT right now and you are taking your DAS?

In which case you can't restrict an ER-5 down so you can legally ride it (not including riding lessons with a qualified instructor) - you are stuck with the 125cc restriction until you pass the test - whether that be on a 125cc bike or the schools ER5

and to be honest if you take the test on the schools ER-5 then you'll have an unrestricted licence.

If you havn't done your test yet then you won't be allowed to ride an ER-5 whether it's restricted or not I'm afraid. It will be resticted to 33bhp, which is the limit for under 21's for 2 years after you've done your test. If you're still on L plates then you're restricted to a much lower power figure (about 13 bhp?) and aren't allowed to go over 125cc regardless of power. Unfortunately the City Fly is about as powerful as you'll get legally on L plates (you can get much more powerful 2 stroke 125s but they break the power limit, although chances of getting pulled are minimal unless you ride like a loon).

Do your test on the City Fly, buy the ER-5, then misplace the restrictors if you want.

Thanks for the replies guys.

So are you saying that I am not allowed to ride the ER5 even when it is restricted to 13bhp? The person selling it said they had it reatricted and learnt on it no problems.

I have been learning on an ER5 with the driving school, and took my test on it yesterday, but failed due to not overtaking on a dual carriageway Sad. Apart from that I had only 4 minors, and am confident I will pass in the next couple of months.

I would be inclined to call bullshit on it being restricted to 13bhp, 33bhp I'd believe but not 13.

Even if it were restricted to 13bhp then you'd have a bike putting out almost exactly the same power as your Cityfly but weighing twice as much.

And yes even if that were so there is still the cc restriction until you pass a test.

Stick with the Cityfly and stay l;egal until you get licenced.

If you were taking your test on an ER-5 then you were doing the DAS which would mean you don't need a restricted bike afterwards.

Sorry about you fluffing your test - at least you know what to expect now though. You can put in for your test again in the next couple of weeks - could be worth doing if your time on the Cityfly is that miserable.

< edit >

How'd you fail for not overtakig on a dual carriageway?

Thanks for clearing that up Kai.

Yeah I was really gutted to not pass, being a teacher I would have had two weeks holiday to find a nice ride and play about on it Sad. Now I have to wait until I can get a test slot, and have the free time to do it Sad

You're right though, now I know how the test process works, and I know that I can pass it as long as I don't get unlucky. Just frustrating I got failed on such a stupid thing when I ride down that road every day on the way to work and overtake all the time, I just didn't want to look too cocky/dangerous in front of the examiner. A horse box was in front of me, and slowed to turn off the road, I decided to wait behind so I could speed back up when he left. The examiner said it was an otherwise empty road, and I should have moved over to the fast lane to overtake!

Annoying thing is that the slowness of the City Fly really stresses me out on the A27, it's more dangerous me riding that than the 500!

Slightly unrelated, but a 33BHP ER-5 will feel like a rocket compared to the CityFly.

The ER5 at 33bhp is a very good choice, it handles it brilliantly.

Its nocks about 15mph top speed off it, so top speed on the flat would be about 95. But it will still get their very quickly.

I've had both an ER5 at 33bhp and also a Z750S.

The Z750s is shxte in comparrison to the restriction, the ER5 is quicker.

Don't get me wrong the Z750s is a nice bike, but the ER takes the restriction better.

WHAT ?

TheY cannot fail you for that alone. If you were looking behind and checking if it was safe to move out and you have the power to do it safely then fine.

But a fail ? Seems odd.
