Hello,

Totaly new here, google searched for kind people with biking knowhow and it brought up this forum as the first option! Laughing

I have a 97 RS125 had it about 5 months and never had much of a problem with it, untill yesterday!

Heres the deal,

When I push the electric start it dont turn over, all you get is a faint clicking in or around the engine, I removed the fairing just to see where the clicking was coming from and its coming from this box

/pic/ https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a383/Rain3h/DSC00012.jpg

It sits behind the rad, ive checked all the plugs and wires are not lose and done the same all over the bike, Ive tryed bump starting it and it works fine!

So im guessing its purely electrical and that this box has somthing to do with it, but what do I know?

Any ideas on what the problem is, or this little box would be great!

Thanks Smile

Sounds like your battery is flat or on the way out, see if you can borrow one off someone or try putting yours on charge.

hmm I was just about to post a similar problem.. If you change the title of this post you'll get some more interest in the thread Thumbs Up

My problem is a a DT125RE. I get just a clicking sound but my bike will bump fine too. I used to just put it into gear, move back and forwards, put it back into neutral then it would turn over and start. Now it just very occasionally tries to turn once but wont continue to turn the engine over..

Ive tracked the clicking noise to a box thats holds the fuses..

My fuses seem ok (checked yours?) and ive also tried another battery after I tried charging my old battery and im unconvinced its the batteries because sometimes it will start after a good 30 attempts (1st gear, rock bike, neutal, starter button Shocked Rolling Eyes

Like you ive also checked all connections/earths Sad

I belive the clicking noise we are hearing though is a solenoid so I guess its workings else it wouldnt click...

hopefully someone can help us out Thumbs Up Smile

edit 1 .. this may be of some use to you.. https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=110467&highlight=click

edit 2 .. "R" Bike Starting Problems?

Click, Click, Click, . . . Is that all you hear sometimes when you press that starter button? Chances are, that the clicking is coming from your bikes starter relay (located under the fuel tank in. If so, it is telling you that you better replace it before you are forced to walk home soon. Usually, this "clicking" instead of actual starter operation begins intermittently and gets progressively worse over a short period of time. That's lucky and allows you time to procure a new one before it's time to walk.... HMMMMMM...

Have you checked the battery?

Much more likely that it's the battery than the starter relay.

As Carvell says check the battery first, charge it and try it. Batteries do just give up, especially cheaper ones.

just got back from the yammy workshop. They said check the battery too else its either a stuck starter motor or a new relay (which is £32!!! wtf?! Shocked Shocked)

anyways I charged my original battery the other day and gave it a go but it made no difference so I charged the battery from my speedfight 100 and put that in and still no different.

checked the voltage of the original battery just now and its 13v

checked the voltage on the speedfight battery thats in my bike right now and its 13v, then 12.7v ignition on and 12.5v when pressing the starter button. It dropped to 12.4v after leaving the ignition on for 5 mins.

I also checked the voltage going to the starter motor and thats 12.5 too.

@ Raineh. Dont mean to hijack your thead mate just I was going to post about my problem and I saw your thread Smile

Have a look for the big wires going to the starter relay - they should be big heavy cables. Now unhook them one at a time from the starter relay. what do they look like ? Are they rusty? Get a bit of fine sandpaper and rub either side of the spade connector until it is clean. Also try and clean the connector on the starter relay. Then get a bit of wd40 on the connector and reassemble. The do the same to the second cable and see what happens.

I had the same problem on my ER5 a while back and cleaning up the connectors cured the problem. The fact the relay is clicking suggest it is at least trying to switch. All there is in that start circuit is :-
Battery - cable - starter relay - cable - starter motor.

Do you have access to a multimeter?

Cheers

Dave

that click is starter relay or soloniod. common fault is that water has corroded the copper plates inside. to test everything out is easy.
make sure bike is in neutral.
make sure battery is charged
get a piece of thick wire ie coat hanger or apair of pliers anything like that will do.
now look at the relay there is 2 thick red wires one is from the battery the other goes to the starter motor.
you dont need the ignition on at this point.
temporary join the 2 thick wires and see if the starter motor turns the engine.
if it does then its the relay
if it doesnt its your starter motor or dead battery.
now i have known the starter wire to come away off the starter motor do the wiggle test ie: wiggle the connection on the motor se if anything moves if it does tighten it up
and thats it a quick and simple test.
hope it helps you out and this test goes for any bike or scooter
