I'm after personal reccommendations for fishing boat engines and a decent magazine for boat sea fishing.

I know there's a shed load of mags out there for everything, but I wanted to know if there were any fishermen out there who would recommend a magazine whose coverage is respected.

I've a friend who's got a 14 foot boat, and if i want to use it then i can. So I need somewhere to start reading about suitable engines before i can go find one that meets my needs and my budget.

It would be sea fishing, up to half a mile offshore, mostly close to the shore but also prawn and lobster pots, in seas which aren't too high.

I'm going to get involved with the local harbour and sailing club, but need somewhere to start on my own.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Hi,

I don't know anything about them, but I think they're called Outboards.

Hope that helps

Well, you say that, but my next question was going to be does it have an outboard or inboard engine?

What hull type? Planing or displacement?

My Dad used to have a semi-cabined 18ft Hardy marine fishing boat (don't think they make them anymore) with a semi-planing hull. It had a 50hp, fixed pitch Evinrude outboard on it which was plenty of motor to get it up on the plane even with four or five people in. I don't recall him having any reliability issues whatsoever with it.

Myself i would probably go with an outboard. I don't fish myself but i know plenty who do. Ive got a 4.2m rigid inflatable boat and its powered by a 2smoke 30 horsepower yamaha. 30hp on my boat is plenty of power enough to get some good speed with 4 up.

From my personal experience and in my opinion Yamaha's are better. Four of our five rescue boats at my sailing club have yamaha's. 2 of them are 60hp smokes and the others are a 100hp and 80hp 4stroke. And we rarely have any problems with them.
Evinrudes and mecurys dont like salt water much lol. Honda 4strokes i just think are horrible engines.

As for magazines theres tons! There is a magazine called 'total sea fishing' which may have some info?

Have you ever been on the water before etc by yourself. If you have'nt id suggest taking someone experienced or going out with an experienced person to get clued up on the sea and all. Its not just a matter of getting up and going.

As said already it depends on what type of boat it is. You also need to know what length shaft you need, long or short.
If it's just a basic boat like this. Then anything from 15-30hp would do the job.

Total sea fishing?.

Thank you.

It turns out that some people will drive all the way from the midlands to go fishing on the west wales coast for a few hours.
Mad.

Right, I'm off for a ride to Derby Mr. Green
