My parents have never really liked me riding motorcycles as I only really do so to joy-ride, and not to commute so and I'm moaned at almost everyday about the dangers of riding, yet every time I'm out on my bike I can't help but feel the need to ride faster and faster, obviously I'm sensible to a point (e.g I don't overtake in stupid places like blind corners but I do on busy straight roads that have oncoming traffic) but in all honesty I scare myself sometimes, not necessarily when I'm on the bike as when I'm riding I feel like I'm in full control but when I think back to certain aspects of my adrenaline rushed rides I think "Crap, that could have ended up badly". Anyway I was just curious, do others on here do the same thing? and do you guys have any way of controlling yourself when your on ride-outs etc?

Do some trackdays. Hasn't stopped me riding quickly on the road but it does let you go a little more 'balls out' and safely.

By all means give it some beans out on the country roads but overtaking on blind bends is just a bit stupid.

that wall is fake Wink Tis really wallpaper type stuff Cool but yeah, I do that too, obviously not overtaking on blind corners, but by being in situations where you think 'that could have ended badly', your not really going to push and broaden your(or the bikes) limits, so if one day you are put in that situation, you will be stuffed. also if every 'biker' who made a decision stopped to think about it, and thought of all the worse case scenarios, they would be road kill a hell of a lot faster than a biker who takes it in and learns from it. I say go for it, get your adrenalin rush, as long as your not endangering innocent people. or children, or puppy, or kittens lives.

P.S, forgot to mention hedgehogs. Thumbs Up

Disclaimer: if you go silly speeds to get ya rush, and lose your license or meet bubba, don't dome blaming me Cool

Having a livelihood that depends on being mobile and 9 points on your licence tends to focus a person, somewhat Smile

I have this problem. After over a year off riding when i picked up my S4 i was so nervous. Then when i was starting to ride i found myself lineing up for overtakes within 20mins on this first ride. Even though a lot of my last year was wreaked by motorbikes i find myself hooning most of the time.

I think you need to keep reminding yourself that yes, fast riding is one of the best rushes ever, when you mess up you will spend months recovering or dead Thumbs Up

You'll probably find you get the same rush from riding a slow bike quickly. Especially if the handling and brakes aren't exactly cutting edge.

I've always maintained that riding 'fast' is not a function of speed, more a function of how close to the handling and performance limits of the vehicle you are.

My Jawa doing 70mph is a hell of a lot 'faster' than my VFR doing 120 (and probably has the same stopping distance).

I agree - dragging my GS550 round bends is far more rewarding that riding the latest tackle IMO. Of course, I get a little ragged and close to the edge on occasion, but a well chosen set of lines through consecutive bends on an old ratter will embarass many modern bikes.

Or is it that they are afraid to pass in case I fall off???? lol

I agree totally I always used to get that rush when topping out my old Aprilia RS50, now that I'm on an Aprilia RS125 even though it at times scares me all I want to do is take it to the limit, therefore I was asking myself if I should dare jump to bigger bikes (rather interested in purchasing a CBR 400 with RCV fairings on it) because when pushing the limit becomes over 130 mph it starts to get you really questioning.

Your not riding fast believe me, your on a 125. You think you are because you were used to a 50 and it sounds like you maybe on the edge of your ability and that is making you nervous.

Agree, the first time i took my RS into the powerband i came home and was shaking. Trust me it feels fast and around the twisties it can be but more open roads a bigger bike will go MUCH faster Thumbs Up

Feeling the frame bending and the suspension wobbling mid corner is allot can be interesting.. any modern bikes i've tried have been a bit weird to say the least.

Chooseing when and where to go a bit faster is important, some areas its not going to be a problem and others its positively suicidal..

Yesterday i was out and saw a new r1 upside down in a ditch against a tree and its owner looking a bit freaked out on the phone, a few people already stopped but checked things were ok anyways and carried on, as it happens she was 100% unscathed.. i use this road every day and see plenty of riders going way faster than is safe.. every so often you see this sort of thing that reminds you to stay within your limits, the bikes and the road your on..

I'm 66 and been riding on and off since 1958 and can honestly say I'm enjoying my riding more than ever since joining the IAM course last year passing in January this year.
I aproach riding the same way as my golf and skiing. The smoother and slower I feel the faster I was going or the more accurate I was hitting the ball. Good riding slow ar fast comes down to observation and accurate interpretation of what you see and if what you see isn't making sense you are getting into trouble.

I disagree - 80 is fast no matter what bike you're on, on the basis that if you lose it the very least you can expect is its going to really f00king hurt.

I'm guessing this guy hasn't passed his test or he wouldn't be on a 125 so there's also the chance of loosing your license before you've even got it.

Although I do agree that its possible you're coming close to your current ability or doing slightly stupid things. For instance I often-ish do 60(+) in a 30 and overtake, which is very wrong but sometimes you can't help it and I'm starting to think about time and place now, analyse current traffic and hidden dangers etc, if I think I could endanger others I won't do anything rash, bide your time.

On the ability front though, if you don't break the rules and go faster you won't improve. I'm learning all the time when I'm riding because when I'm hammering round a roundabout or whatever I'm conciously thinking right down a gear or 2, forward observation, chuck it in the corner and power on. Gear change, go go go. Thats why I ride, because I wan't that rush. There isn't ANYTHING in the world that can beat it.

Push yourself under the right conditions, if you have trouble holding back in heavy traffic etc my advice would be to get on a track

Having an off where a black cab came to a screeching halt about 5 foot from my head as a courier certainly helped.
Having a serious off or too many genuine close calls seems to slow people down generally.

I try and think whether what I'm about to do may result in one of those "Oh shit I'm dead" situations, if it does, I ease off.

...you'll still end up riding like a twat once in a while, it's inevitable.

Well it all depends on how fast you go naturally. There was a certain stretch of road i use to average 120mph so when i went down to 80mph it felt really slow, it all depends on how fast you go at other times, it you always stay to the legal limits then 80mph will feel quite fast Thumbs Up

I agree with redliner........a few serious near misses should make you think about how fast and how you ride your bike, i made one a few years ago and afterwards though, damn that was stupid.

i was over taking about 8 cars and the front one decided to turn right and just about hit me, a near miss you would think yes, the bad point being if he'd have hit me i would have been on the wrong side of the road probably sliding on my face, with the added bonus of there was a rather large lorry heading my way. Shocked

I was out for a hoon last night after dispatching all day on a 125, so i had been going at a fair lick, then in willesden (NW London), there was one lane turning right, two cars in in, and the left side for straight on, being the fuckin idiot, i dident have my left hand on the bars, the second car has done one of those yank the wheel sharp turns into my lane, and somehow thankfully i have shut my speed right down (wasent going that fast at that point), managed to lock the front up and slide, stamped my left foot down and somehow came to a stop, but i thought fuck... that was well close, had to get off the bike and sit on a wall for a little while...

Going fast is relative to how well you can stop when needed.
I watched a Men and Motors programme about speeders who were given the chance to attand a police lecture instead of getting points.
At one point the policeman put a dummy of a child in the road and pointed to a car some distance away. He said "if that car was doing 30mph he would stop in front of the child but if he was travelling at 40mph he would still be doing 26mph by the time he reached the child.
At first I didn't believe what I heard, then I thought about the extra thinking distance etc and it all started to make sense. I then asked a friend who is police instructor at Hendon and he confirmed these facts.
This has had a profound ieffect on me and I now try never to speed in built up areas especially on minor roads like housing estates etc.
We think we are the best when in reality we are just normal and fallible.
