PostPosted: 03:47 - 12 Apr 2007    Post subject: A challenge! Find me a bike. Reply with quote

I've just about got the money in my hands from the sale of my bike, and it amounts to a 1000 quid, and what I want to do, is put another 500 to that, and get myself a new ride for the summer.

I also want a proper faired sportsbike.

Thing is I don't know what the f**k I can get for 1500. All the bikes I'm looking at are 2000+, and when it comes to bikes older than maybe 5 years, I'm lost.

So I'm hoping you lot can suggest a sportsbike that's not a complete shi**er with a 600cc engine, no older than 10 years that might fit the bill.

Thanks.

Thumbs Up

I'd probably look for a FireStorm for that money... a lot of bike for the cash.

Yeh, always liked those, but 9 points limits me to 600cc; past that quotes start getting silly for insurance.

Why not look at the 400cc sportsbikes?
Wouldnt be too hard to find a decent one for 1.5k I shouldn't think.

I'm not really an out-and-out sportsbike fan (well, I am, but if I rode one I'd undoubtedly end up in a hedge) but you'll definitely find a few older CBRs around that price.
Unless you're looking for 'proper sportsbikes', you could look at the RF600Rs and ZZR600s. Serious value for money in those.

Yes, most of them were grey-imported as it was virtually impossible to get a license to ride anything bigger than a 400 in Japan at the time, so they were incredibly popular.
What happened is that many of those owners sold the bike after a year to get the new model, and they got imported.

There were a few models officially sold in this country though. Not entirely sure which, but I know that the VFR400 NC30 was.

You'll get a much newer much lower mileage 600 for that money.

They stopped making 400's in the mid nineties. This means all the mid nineties mint ones are still about £3-4k and all the cheap ones are shagged early nineties or late eighties NC29's or 30's with 30k on the clocks. You shouldn't have any trouble finding an older ZX6R (even as late as 1997 or 1998) for £1.5k I'd have thought.

And the FireStorm is the same insurance group as all of the 600's.

Should definitely be able to get a sports 600 from around 1997-98 for that money. Perhaps not a CBR600, unless it's a real shed, as they hold their value a little better due to perceived build quality and reliability, and owners know this and ask higher prices.

A Suzuki GSXR600 SRAD or Kawasaki ZX6R are the sporty options. A Thundercat is a bit more laid back, and a ZZR600 a bit more laid back still. None are exactly slow.

The '98 SRAD (W model) has some engine & detail mods that make it a slightly better buy than a '97, for almost no extra. The ZX6R was updated from the F to G model (earlier one has square rear end) at that time also, and the later model is worth the extra.

You should be able to get change out of £1500 for an early F model ZX6R. Finding one that isn't shagged would be the main problem.
