Saw this parked up in a pub carpark yesterday. Looks dated as hell, but stunning all the same. I've never seen one of these on the road before in my life.

Hi

Used to see a few around NI in the 1980s when I lived there. They look surprisingly good when painted.

Some people I know did a load of work to one a few years back for the owner. Said that it got an awful lot of attention when they drove it (and they were surprised how many bits were standard parts from other cars and available off the shelf).

All the best

Keith

Cool Thumbs Up

I saw one in New York a few years back, with the number plate "HED A TIME". It was ace, I got a pic of me standing next to it.

Painted?? why would you paint one. That brushed steel finish looked stunning, it seems silly to cover it up.

Because stainless steel (at least the grade they used) does mark, and is a total pain to keep looking clean.

All the best

That one I saw today was mint. There wasn't a mark on it. If someone told me it had just come from the production line I would have believed them.

There was one for sale in Stafford (the old Renault garage at Moss Pitt). Went to have an ogle at it with a mate, he didn't know it was stainless steel and lent on it with his sweaty palms. The sales rep went mad at him as it was such a bugger to keep clean.

Don't think I could paint one though, its a bit like painting a gold chain silver.https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v112/finglonga/Finglonga%20Inc/ne_nau.gif?t=1176536532

You can buy reconditioned ones for £15k. The monocoques are stainless so never rust. Replace all the bolt on bits and you have a very serviceable rear engined car.

The lotus people wanted it to be mid engined, and would have gotten their way if it wasn't for the fact that John DeLorean insisted on having a space for a set of golf clubs (behind the seat) so the engine was moved over the rear wheels which destroyed the reputedly sublime handling. Bastard.

I remember seeing one some years ago when I was at college in Bath.
I guess they're that rare that when you see one it really stands out. I like the look purely because it's so distinctive.

a few facts for the younguns:

The DeLorean plant opened in 1978
Famed documentary-maker DA Pennebaker came to film the transformation of a muddy field into a car factory
Although all of the cars were unpainted stainless steel when they left the factory, some were painted afterwards and three were gold-plated
John DeLorean was arrested by the FBI on 19 October 1982 in Los Angeles and charged with trafficking cocaine
Over £80m of public money went to subsidise the DeLorean plant in the hope of reducing levels of unemployment in West Belfast
In 1984 John DeLorean was cleared of all charges against him. His lawyer said the agents had cajoled DeLorean into a position that made it look as if he had committed a crime
When asked by journalists if he felt bitter about the damage done to his reputation as a businessman, DeLorean joked: "Would you buy a used car from me?"
