Right, I'll try not to go into too much detail but...

Ive always bought private before...and I have seen a bike I want at dealers. I have set myself a firm budget and I am not going over it.

Seen a bike in a dealers....good price, but just need about £300 knocking off...and they wont. Tried em a couple of times. Left it a good few days before getting back in touch etc.....but dont want to make a prat of myself, by keep contacting them.

Anybody got any tips..... to sway them into my way of thinking.

Find out if they'll do a discount for Finance... they often will because the sales guys get commission on the finance packages.

if they won't give you the discounted price for cash, then you can be cheeky.

Buy it on finance, but pay off the finance company in full before thre first payment comes out. That way you incur NO interest, and the salesman doesn't get his finance commission Wink

Totally depends on the dealer. In my experience the smaller guys are more likely to budge on price, the bigger ones will try to throw in "extras" but tend not to be as flexible on the ticket price.

Unless the bike you want is pretty rare if it's over your budget walk away. Either you will find another one at the price you want to pay or you can go back in say a month or so and if it's still there offer them your price again, they may be glad to get rid of it by then!

Timing is also important. Best to go at the end of the month when they are trying to exceed or get their sales target. If one more bike puts them over quota then they will get more commision and may be more keen to sell. Otherwise try and recover the £300 through other means...get them to throw in a year's free service, and a road fund licence...maybe an extra like a pannier or alarm, or clothing! If they won't budge...then walk away, you'll soon find someone willing to meet your terms.

I had £500 knocked off my bike by walking in with the cash and saying, here's £2800, for that *point* bike, make it happen. Very Happy

Just be careful with the finance thing in case there is a penalty for paying it out early.
Else you may end up paying more for it Confused

I've never had a dealer ever budge on price , never ever ever ever and I've been to alot.

which is why I consider most dealers to be scum, who lie cheat and virtually steal , FSH my arse , oil is black as coal , brakes have no meat on them forks are pitted to hell, who exist purely to rip of newer biking folks.

and walking away ? , lets see including NC30s , VFR750s VFR800s , CBR600s ZX6Rs , I've walked away from well over 100+ bikes,

To be fair, I had been in there, and talked about price and such first, but when I knew I wanted it, I just went in there and said.

I paid a price I was happy with, and was a reasonable price considering other bikes avalible on the market. Smile

Homework is the most powerful tool in the buyers tool box.

I've bought 2 of my bikes from dealers, both times I got them for at least £200 less than the advertised price. Confused

Fastline in Preston have told me they can get the brand new imported bike I want (even though they will not be getting it as stock, it will be a one-off order for me) and have promised me that they will beat any written quote from any other dealer for the total OTR price by at least £150, probably more, and will do the first service on it for free. Confused

Maybe you're just not fluttering your eyelashes enough....... Wink or actually opening your bag when they're looking to show them the cash in a big brown envelope........ Laughing

Told them I could drop the cash on the table there and then...but they wouldnt have it....best they could do was 6 months road tax, whats ....erm...no I dont think so. Tight gits.

The bike isnt particulary overpriced, Maybe I am pushing my luck and I sort of feel like I am being tight, but a budget is a budget. If I start going overbudget by £300, then it might go to £600.....so I have got to draw the line somewhere. They are pretty new bikes, so not many available in the private market yet, unfortunately.

Will wait till end of month...and then try em again.

Bartering is getting harder with dealers these days. You used to be able to offer cash for a bike or car and wahay you can get a nice discount, but it doesn't seem to work as often now.

My bike was £7300 (cost price) but with 0% finance (Limited honda offer)
dealer would not budge on price I told him I had found the same bike for £6500 on the net (showed him the printout) he went off to talk to the boss. Came back and said it was an import (maybe, maybe not)but he could offer me the same bike (05 bike unreg on a 06 plate) for £6999. I pointed to the printout and said yes but thats still 500 more for the same thing.
Went off then came back again and offered £6799 I asked for it in writing. Then went to another dealer and showed them the peice of paper and asked for a better deal (but on an 06 bike 06 plate) and got it for £6750

So my advice is to find a similar deal somewhere else and play them off of oneanother they have much better margins to play with than they would lead you to believe. Use the net and find a cracking price to start the bidding war with.

So why didn't you buy it for £6500 from the place you found on the net? Confused

Cos it was prob an import, I had to take advantage of the 0% offer as I couldn't fund the bike myself and the £6500 wasn't from a Honda dealer and therefore no 0% so interest would have been over a grand making the bike £7500. + I fell in love with the Orange+black 06 rather than the red silver purple 05 I was using for bartering purposes Wink

The profit % the dealers work on for new bikes is very small, and generally not much more for used, if they wont lower the price of the bike ask them to throw in a helmet and some gloves, or get them to do a deal on servicing

Sorry, just a bugbear of mine. 'Barter' is a very commonly misused word. If you were bartering, you would be trying to swap something (not money) for the bike. What you are trying to do is haggle over the price.

The process of bartering often involves a certain amount of haggling but does not involve the exchange of money.

BARTER: to trade by exchange of commodities rather than by the use of money.

HAGGLE: To bargain, as over the price of something.

[/PEDANT]

Could always try 'The Dealer so and so down the road has it this much cheaper'. Sometimes, in the spirit of competition, that will be enough to reduce things a bit.

I had great joy when my local dealer wouldn't budge on price and wouldn't give any extras either. I rang another dealer who was selling the same bike with loads of extras for £800 cheaper. And the bike hadn't been sitting in the show room for two months with every one sitting on it. Paid £100 deposit over the phone ( while still sat at the desk of the salesman of my local dealer) Picked the bike up 4 days later and had great joy parking it up outside of my local dealers, nice shiney and new. Kept on going in for about 3 months asking if they had sold it yet. Which they hadn't.
