USELESS.. whatever twat designed this piece of shit needs kicking to death.. what makes it even more insulting is they are the only thing garages will accept you filling, not even steel jerry cans which won't piss fuel everywhere but into the tank... whoever is responsible for that bit of BS needs setting on fire Thumbs Down

(i knew this already but having just been reminded, even without the piece of crap nozzle it still somehow is allover the place..)

From now on I'll fill an empty oil bottle at night Thumbs Down

/rant mode off

What you want to do is cut up a plastic jerry can and stick all the plastic onto the surface of a steel jerry can. Problem solved.

There is some law or guideline that says it has to be a 5 litre plastic can or a 20 litre steel jerrycan.

I've never had an issue with my 20l jerrycan.

Or the ones i have are extra shit :/

Even after liberal application of ptfe tape on the nozzle (shortened so it dosn't back up which makes it worse) it leaks less but still leaks.. its very obvious its not going to seal against anything on its own, i feel sorry for poor folks who mind their tanks getting doused in petrol..

afaik 5 litres is the maximum you can carry on a bike? and more for cars..

(i think somebody here was stopped from filling a bike tank not on the bike because it wasn't a shitty plastic jerry can.. Rolling Eyes )

We have a pretty bog-standard can with a screw on nozzle, it's never had any trouble. If you're going to need it, I'd invest in a new one, sounds like yours is dodgy.

You can get 5l and 10l steel jerry cans too. Providing they are marked up with the words "Petroleum spirit. Highly flammable." you are fine to transport and fill them.

The limit is 2x5 litres for plastic and 1x10 litres for metal containers if you are going to be carrying them in a vehicle.

Link to HSE memo on petrol containers and storage

Basically there isn't actually a law stating what you can and can't fill, the law is to how you carry and store it.

As always though, if the filling station isn't happy with your container, they are under no obligation to fill it if they don't want to (although it wouldn't be actually illegal for them to allow you to fill a washing up bowl if you so wished).

A while back when there was the diesel shortage, me and my dad got these massive 205l plastic tanks (think waterbutt, they are used to hold mixed water+car shampoo) into the back of a van, strapped to a pallete, so his branch (distribution) could stay open. We got questioned and so claimed that the citroen dispatch had a 'modified for long distance jobs tank' Smile that was probably highly illegal (but diesel doesnt go boom when ignited so maybe twas?) but we got away with it.

Also when myself and friends wish to have a massive bonfire we will walk down to a garage and buy a full jerrycan of petrol for every person there, that seems to be ok with them too.

I've been wondering abut filling a coke bottle with petrol and carrying it in the tank bag for cases of forgetting to fill up, not bothered about the legality of it too much, just whether it will explode in the summer heat and torch me bike(also scare any innocent bystanders, children or kittens) Laughing

I've never had much problems with plastic jerry cans - the plastic fuel jug I've got has a useless connection to it's nozzle however, given up and use a funnel now.

Mostly I've not had problems with petrol stations with filling up lots of gerry cans - often 3 or 4 x 20 litres. Had trouble when filling up my passat then 3 jerry cans because it took too long and 'timed out' - was quite a bit over 100 litres though!

Um in some of my other hobbys, which involve petrol and explosions, I have found that coke bottles *sometimes* get eaten through by petrol, but do not explode under heat/sunlight, it takes ignition of some kind to actually cause an explosion, and remember that if it is full, it WILL NOT explode. 'Explosion' (in the case of petrol) is caused by fumes in a sealed container igniting/being subjected to pressure to cause it to react in a volotile manner. if there is no air space at the top bigger than an inch or two, and its air tight, you wont have sealed in fumes.
