Does anyone on the forum do boxing?
They've got a club near me and I seen a poster looking for members, experienced or beginner and I was wondering if anyone on the forum had any first hand experience?
I'm 23 and I've never boxed in my life, apart from the odd fight after a few too many beers
Is it too late to take it up? ____________________ Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in one pretty and preserved piece, but to slide across the line broadside, thoroughly used up, worn out, leaking oil, shouting GERONIMO!!!

I tried it when I was younger. It was completely the opposite to what i was expecting, I thought Id be walking into a room with a bunch of nutters who would want to kick the shit out of me at every chance but I was made very welcome!!
Be prepared for an epic fitness challenge!! When I tried I was playing rugby for two different teams and squash twice a week. i couldnt keep up within the first ten minutes of the training!!! Had to give up in the end as I couldnt control my Asthma
Good luck!! ____________________ RS125 > CBR6 > SV650S > ZX636R > GSX1300RZ Hayabusa > 06 RSVR Mille > SV1000S > Street Triple 765 RS |

Not boxing per say, but I have just started Kickboxing.
I too have never done any martial arts or contact sports such as this before and felt quite intimidated. As soon as I walked through the doors, I was made to feel at home and people go gently and understand that you are new. This hasn't stopped me going a little hard at times We were supposed to be doing light contact leg sparring yesterday and my partner asked me not to kick so hard
We do 2 minutes of exercise followed by a 1 minutes rest....I thought that I too was relatively fit, but it has now been proved otherwise
I am so glad that I plucked up the courage and took the hardest step and walked through those doors ____________________ Current : MSX 125 Past : CBR 900RR Monkeybike : c50 LAC : ZXR750 H2 : FZR600 : ZX7R P3 : YW100 : TRX850: Trophy 900 T309 : GSXR 600 L0: Monkeybike : XJ6S Whosthedaddy |

guys, no way are you too old! think about it,your just peaking. you dont have to be fit or in shape to box,you get fit and in shape when you box. where i box, theres the 'kiddies',then the adults, and then the people who are 'carded'. im in with the adults. and im 15 coming on 16. i would reccomend you go to the place you have spotted, and maybe go before a class starts, and talk to the instructor. thats what i did,i went about 30 mins before a class was about to start, and got asked to go home get my kit and come back in 20 mins for the session that day. the first time might be awkward, because you probbably wont know anyone (bonus if you do) and you will be 'following' everyone else. but after the first session,if you show your SERIOUS people will start to talk to you and help you out ect. it really is a great atmosphere. once you and your coach are confident, you will start 'sparring' (only if you wish you fight amateur when you are ready, otherwise you will just be doing non contact if you only want to get fit). example; 7months ago,i wasnt 'fat' or unfit, but at the same time i wasnt happy where i was at. since i've started boxing my stamina has shot through the roof compared to what it was,i.e i ran 5miles this morning at 5:00a.m with relative ease. i've cleaned my diet up,and everything else generally falls into place. im not sure what else i can rabble on about, but Boxing is my hobby, and i dont mind you asking questions. obviously im only 15 (if that affects anything ) and i am not the most experienced person on the board to do with boxing, but i know my fair share. just ask if you want anything else. good luck fellas and get out there! (: |

I let a mate talk me into sparring with him for practice. It was ok at first & then he hit me a bit harder than I thought he should so I thumped him back pretty hard.
Then he hit me like he meant it & it took about 3 days to remember who I was...
Stuck with it for a while tho & learned how to REALLY hurt people. There's a rather big difference between being thumped by some scrote in the boozer & being punched by someone who can box... |

I got caught once doing ju jitsu as well (a few times actually) but one really hard kick to face, bloody hurts, but its all part of the fun, i loved the sparring side of it, it was practising moves and kata's that did my head in. Thats why I want boxing, I want the fitness and the sparring. Hurting people is easy really, it aint JUST how hard you punch, its how hard you can take a punch as well. Can't wait to get stuck in now im thinking about more |

to be honest with you, sparring doesnt 'hurt'. i was thrown in at the deepend to spar with someone my age,who had been boxing for ages and had already had a couple of fights. i did alright againt him though, even if i did freeze abit, once the adrenalin starts pumping you dont give a toss, just keep those hands up. but saying that, take a descent liver shot and you my friend, will be on the canvas. like zrx said, any one can punch you,be it punch or swing, but a boxer is trained to punch day in day out, youll see what a punch is. but sparring is nothing to worry about. (you do wear headgear for amateurs) |

If I shed a little could make middleweight or gain a little and be a light heavy.
Not the tallest in the world at 5'9"ish, but have good footwork. So good infact that I have a big fook off friction burn / blister on the bottom of my big toe from constantly shifting around bare foot. ____________________ Current : MSX 125 Past : CBR 900RR Monkeybike : c50 LAC : ZXR750 H2 : FZR600 : ZX7R P3 : YW100 : TRX850: Trophy 900 T309 : GSXR 600 L0: Monkeybike : XJ6S Whosthedaddy |

Mate, any descent liver shot or body shot will put you down. you ever watched boxing yes? take one to the gut,and come back and let us know what its like. i've felt,i know, not a liver shot, but a descent bodyshot. and sparring doesnt make the pain go away. |

Lol @ guvnor
I started it up last year at beginning of my second year of uni.
First club i went to i went with some guy who was considering going pro. My ill fated words to him 'i just want to get used to getting punched again'.
That was due to the fact ive always had a high capacity to take pain, but being punched in the face always stunned me.
First few rounds sparring him, no head guard and no training about how to move out of the way of punches... lol, not good. The guy also broke two of my mates ribs who came along. Bizarrely for quite a chunky guy i seem to have a very good tolerance to body shots. But to be fair i now dont really get fazed by being punched facially, or rather i react quicker.
Anyhew another club started and it was mainly fitness orientated, and as everyone defected to that i started going there. Unfortunately i've developed seriously over active nasal mucus glands for some reason so whenever i do heavy exercise i have to breathe through just my mouth and repeatedly blow my nose. It gets very tiring. Not to mention my knees and back are ridiculous dodgy.
I think by en large it depends on your mental state at the time, and what sort of club you go to. The first club was in a rough council estate, in a shed, and was very much a blood and spit on the walls affair. Good for cutting your teeth, and they did a lot of the old school medicine ball training stuff.
The new place has no ring, and is pretty much entirely focused on fitness. And the killer is most of the guys there are 17 ish, go there 3 nights a week, dont drink or smoke. Which is great, except the exercise routine kills them too. So as you can imagine im fucked
Also guvnor, im 6'4, stocky, and 15 stone. And i seriously struggle to last more then about a minute-90 seconds in a ring actually moving, punching and dodging. Its very different when your brain is working so hard too. You are going to find the fitness a nightmare, so what i would suggest is try and get yourself in shape abit first.
They dont force you in a ring by any stretch of the imagination, and often sparring is just left hand jabs etc. But you may find it abit less demoralising if you have already started the fitness. Also go out and get yourself a skipping rope and force yourself to learn.
I can just about skip, but they force you to speed up for say 20 seconds a piece, which i cant do, and often put my back out trying. So now i tend to just jog on the spot and sprint whenever they ask, which is a viable alternative. But most clubs wont take no for an answer on skipping.
Edit: I also forgot to mention, i used to do lots of martial arts etc, its a VERY different kettle of fish. And no going in there mentioned rucking or 'strong punches'. Every strong punch ive seen by your average guy on a punch machine in clubs or pub fights has been drawn from his foot and might as well have a signed order for delivery. In boxing you need to develop quick explosive power, which i was only just starting to get back after learning to keep my elbow in and work on speed as opposed to my old martial arts style which was solid but abit obvious.
Beware though, there is a massive emphasis on speed over power, especially for amateur fights. Out of curiosity i got the semi pro to deck as hard as possible when i had a head guard on a few times, and it really does take the punt out of it. All amateur fights have to wear headguards. So the idea i had of being some brawler and flooring people in one just physically cant happen until pro really. ____________________ China traffic/travel bike vid - When I make a sweeping statement, please add the word 'statistically' in to the sentence before you bitch...
