Does anyone on the forum do boxing?

They've got a club near me and I seen a poster looking for members, experienced or beginner and I was wondering if anyone on the forum had any first hand experience?

I'm 23 and I've never boxed in my life, apart from the odd fight after a few too many beers Laughing

Is it too late to take it up?

I tried it when I was younger. It was completely the opposite to what i was expecting, I thought Id be walking into a room with a bunch of nutters who would want to kick the shit out of me at every chance but I was made very welcome!!

Be prepared for an epic fitness challenge!! When I tried I was playing rugby for two different teams and squash twice a week. i couldnt keep up within the first ten minutes of the training!!! Had to give up in the end as I couldnt control my Asthma Sad

Good luck!! Thumbs Up

Not boxing per say, but I have just started Kickboxing.

I too have never done any martial arts or contact sports such as this before and felt quite intimidated. As soon as I walked through the doors, I was made to feel at home and people go gently and understand that you are new. This hasn't stopped me going a little hard at times Whistle We were supposed to be doing light contact leg sparring yesterday and my partner asked me not to kick so hard Laughing

We do 2 minutes of exercise followed by a 1 minutes rest....I thought that I too was relatively fit, but it has now been proved otherwise Embarassed

I am so glad that I plucked up the courage and took the hardest step and walked through those doors Thumbs Up

I am 23 as well and I want to start it too, I did ju-jitsu years ago and got a couple of trophies at it, but to be honest i found it quite boring at times and I want to start boxing but......

does it matter about your fitness levels when you start? What i mean is over the last couple of years i have turned into a bit of a fat fucker, too many beers kebabs and fags. Do I need to have a certain fitness level before I go through the door, or should i just go and build my fitness up there?

I let a mate talk me into sparring with him for practice. It was ok at first & then he hit me a bit harder than I thought he should so I thumped him back pretty hard.
Then he hit me like he meant it & it took about 3 days to remember who I was... Rolling Eyes
Stuck with it for a while tho & learned how to REALLY hurt people. There's a rather big difference between being thumped by some scrote in the boozer & being punched by someone who can box... Wink

I got caught once doing ju jitsu as well (a few times actually) but one really hard kick to face, bloody hurts, but its all part of the fun, i loved the sparring side of it, it was practising moves and kata's that did my head in. Thats why I want boxing, I want the fitness and the sparring. Hurting people is easy really, it aint JUST how hard you punch, its how hard you can take a punch as well. Can't wait to get stuck in now im thinking about more Very Happy

If I shed a little Shifty could make middleweight or gain a little and be a light heavy.

Not the tallest in the world at 5'9"ish, but have good footwork. So good infact that I have a big fook off friction burn / blister on the bottom of my big toe from constantly shifting around bare foot.

No, sparring let's you adjust and perpare for the pain. If someone connect's with an amazing shit then yes it may knock you down, but shouldnt.

You should be stood so you can take the weight transfer onto your back leg so you wont fall over merel go backwards, and your abdomen should be more than strong enough to take quite a few hit's. Not to mention you should be blocking anyway.

If it's any concelation, a gloved hand is alot softer than an exposed shin the the abdomen.

Lol @ guvnor Laughing

I started it up last year at beginning of my second year of uni.

First club i went to i went with some guy who was considering going pro. My ill fated words to him 'i just want to get used to getting punched again'.

That was due to the fact ive always had a high capacity to take pain, but being punched in the face always stunned me.

First few rounds sparring him, no head guard and no training about how to move out of the way of punches... lol, not good. The guy also broke two of my mates ribs who came along. Bizarrely for quite a chunky guy i seem to have a very good tolerance to body shots. But to be fair i now dont really get fazed by being punched facially, or rather i react quicker.

Anyhew another club started and it was mainly fitness orientated, and as everyone defected to that i started going there. Unfortunately i've developed seriously over active nasal mucus glands for some reason so whenever i do heavy exercise i have to breathe through just my mouth and repeatedly blow my nose. It gets very tiring. Not to mention my knees and back are ridiculous dodgy.

I think by en large it depends on your mental state at the time, and what sort of club you go to. The first club was in a rough council estate, in a shed, and was very much a blood and spit on the walls affair. Good for cutting your teeth, and they did a lot of the old school medicine ball training stuff.
The new place has no ring, and is pretty much entirely focused on fitness. And the killer is most of the guys there are 17 ish, go there 3 nights a week, dont drink or smoke. Which is great, except the exercise routine kills them too. So as you can imagine im fucked Thumbs Up

Also guvnor, im 6'4, stocky, and 15 stone. And i seriously struggle to last more then about a minute-90 seconds in a ring actually moving, punching and dodging. Its very different when your brain is working so hard too. You are going to find the fitness a nightmare, so what i would suggest is try and get yourself in shape abit first.
They dont force you in a ring by any stretch of the imagination, and often sparring is just left hand jabs etc. But you may find it abit less demoralising if you have already started the fitness. Also go out and get yourself a skipping rope and force yourself to learn.
I can just about skip, but they force you to speed up for say 20 seconds a piece, which i cant do, and often put my back out trying. So now i tend to just jog on the spot and sprint whenever they ask, which is a viable alternative. But most clubs wont take no for an answer on skipping.

Edit: I also forgot to mention, i used to do lots of martial arts etc, its a VERY different kettle of fish. And no going in there mentioned rucking or 'strong punches'. Every strong punch ive seen by your average guy on a punch machine in clubs or pub fights has been drawn from his foot and might as well have a signed order for delivery. In boxing you need to develop quick explosive power, which i was only just starting to get back after learning to keep my elbow in and work on speed as opposed to my old martial arts style which was solid but abit obvious.
Beware though, there is a massive emphasis on speed over power, especially for amateur fights. Out of curiosity i got the semi pro to deck as hard as possible when i had a head guard on a few times, and it really does take the punt out of it. All amateur fights have to wear headguards. So the idea i had of being some brawler and flooring people in one just physically cant happen until pro really.
