Chinese mini dirt bike bursts into flames

Myself and my mate(rik 220) dug my old chinese mini dirt bike out of the shed. It took ages to start but evetually we got it going. We where taking turns to ride it up the lane. It was my turn and i was taking off when i noticed a smell of petrol, i went down the lane anyway but when i went to turn around it started to smoke badly. i got off the bike and noticed the fuel line had split and the petrol was pissing over the hot engine. There must of been a spark or something from the bike because it burst into flames. It took us ages to get the fire out because the bike was far from my house and any running water. The pics show the bike on fire and the damaged caused by the fire when we put it out. Just thought id warn everyone that these bikes are dangerous and can present a serious threat to young children or even adults.

It would have been even more entertaining if the bike had burst into flames while you were getting air, though.

Sounds like the fuel hose had perished, this could happen to any bike left to stand for a while. I'm glad you weren't hurt, it could've been a lot worse.

yeah but most dont perish as quickly as the ones on cheap component chinese bikes

If gasoline (petrol) spills on a hot surface such as an automobile exhaust system, will it ignite?

Answer. Probably not, as the auto ignition temperature of gasoline (from the PEAC tool) is 853oF (456oC). Exhaust systems are not that hot. As pointed out in the definitions, there are a number of variables that affect the auto ignition temperature so any hot surfaces that even near the auto ignition temperature of a fuel have the potential to ignite the fuel. Of course, a spark can ignite
the fuel.


Does the same situation hold for diesel fuel?

Answer: Not quite; the flash point, auto ignition temperature, vapor pressures, lower and upper explosive limits are different. The flash point for diesel fuel is between 70oF and 140oF depending upon the formulation [typically 120oF or 49oC], which makes diesel fuel difficult to ignite if a bullet is fired into a diesel fuel tanker. The auto ignition temperature of diesel fuel is considerable less than gasoline (one reference lists 351oF or 177oC) making it somewhat easier to ignite when contacted with a very hot surface. The vapor pressure of diesel fuel is much less than gasoline; under normal temperatures, the vapor pressure in a tanker truck should result in a vapor concentration less than the lower explosive limit. Upper and lower explosive limits are different for different formulations [e.g. LEL: 0.4 to 6%; UEL: 8% to 13.5%].

Should have had the video cam running as £250 from U Been Framed would have helped towards the repair bill...

Just goes to show how important checking simple stuff like fuel line is important.

I know, We really should of checked it before we took it out but I wasn't really thinking at the time. I had no idea something like this would happen and happen so fast. You can see from the pictures the ground is wet, when we threw water on the bike the flames got higher Shocked Then we threw a wet rag over it and that smothered the flames to a certain extent. I was expecting it to explode but it didn't the flames just gradually died down.

I suppose it seems a bit stupid now that i threw water on it, but at the time I wasn't really thinking logically, it was quite exciting with all the flames and trying to put it out. Damn adrenaline.

Fuel can ignite on a hot exhaust. I know of a couple of occasions it has happened. Typical exhaust temps are around 850-900 degrees celsius which is almost twice what is necessary to auto-ignite fuel.

no, it boils, and so expands rapidly turning into steam, and the blast of this may cause flames to flare up as fuel is disturbed

as with the classic example of water onto a chip fan fire.

If the water is in short blasts of a fine spray and is directed at the hot flame rather than the base of the fire, it can cool the fire to reduce flames. Its only if water then hits the floor and blasts the fuel as it boils that you have problems. Liquids have to vapourise before they can burn, so if you reduce the heat of the flame, you reduce the amount of fuel being vapourised, thereby reducing the fire.
