just practice tbh, dont snatch at the clutch and be as smooth as possible, you will/might find you will stall it alot at first (setting off) so dont worry about that too much it will all come in time, its second nature to me now Thumbs Up

If you have not already, you should take a CBT!! Thumbs Up

That will teach the basics of riding a bike, from then on its a long learning curve.

Good man! Thumbs Up

I found gears to be a little awkward at first, mainly because I didnt have any conept of when to change up or down and what effects it would have on the bike.

Sometimes I would find myself in a gear which was too high for the speed I was doing or found myself not knowing what gear I was in at all. Laughing

A few weeks into riding and it comes second nature, you attune your ears to the engine and your fingers to the feel of the bike.

However once you have sussed the gears, then comes a long long long long list of everything else you need to work on.

Corning, road positioning, road sense, entry speeds etc etc etc.

Its an exciting time for you my friend packed full of surprises and scares along the way. Enjoy. Thumbs Up

You don't need to know what gear you are in. You only need to know to go up or down.

if you took your CBT on a scooter and are expecting to be able to ride an RS you're a very optimistic person. I took mine on an SR125 and still couldn't deal with the RS 9took at least a month until I was riding it anywhere near properly)

Any friends with knowledge of geared bike? Without some proper help you won't manage it at all.

no one said i was expecting to ride it at the click of my fingers, i know it'll take a bit of getting used to and a few stalls etc. to get used to it but i'll get there eventually

That's not a gear thing, just a confidence thing though.

I tried to give my friend some pointers on geared bikes on the RS125, he had done a CBT on a scooter and had been riding 6 months or so. I'm not saying you won't do it! I'm just saying you'll need some help.
Under-revving was my main reason for stalling in the first few weeks. I got stuck on a couple of hills and turned round rather than risk making the "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeng" sound that I later learnt to love.

I think when learning to ride a bike you do need to know what gear your in.
I found it quite hard the first few days approaching islands and traffic lights etc as I would think I am in 3rd knocking down to 2nd (Or similar situation) and would find myself in a higher gear than i first thought often panicing me as I would not have the desired pull.
Not to mention rushing to knock it down a gear whilst ensuring said path, island, traffic lights were safe and clear.
Also found myself locking back tyre up by knocking it into 1st when thinking I was changing to 2nd.

Obviously for a more experienced rider which I now I feel I am this is all very simple and all comes 2nd nature, but when I was at the early learning stages it was quite a challenge.

Karma Thumbs Up

I strugled big time with gears as never using them or a clutch before i didnt know how to stop it stalling etc. even did a wheelie nearly 12 o clock on my lesson. crashed the bike lol.

With a bit of help from my mate coronaboner i learnt more than i ever did in my lesson and i was able to use the clutch properly and stop my bike stalling. Find a quiet car park and just practise pull away from first and stopping, use a make shift junction to practise on, helps alot.

Do your CBT again on a geared bike. It's cheaper to ruin the clutch/gearbox on the bike school's CG125 than on your own RS. If it expires in 4 months you're going to have to do it again anyway. So do it before you wreck your shiny new steed.

agree with angryjonny. get your CBT done on a geared bike from the training school, whenyou ride the RS, make sure you keep revs high-ish, and let the clutch out slowly, but increasing the revs in conjunction. Thumbs Up

Your right there ace, apexing through a 130mph left hander with a knee firmly planted is no place for camp attitude. It just would not be the same. Thumbs Up

(Only kidding, being gay or not has no effect on bikes, bikers or apexing) Laughing
