Crowded House ... got a feeling most of these started late 80's ... what they did in previous decades

Crowded House started off WAYYYYYYYYYYYYY BAACK in the 70s, but under the name of Split Enz. I dont think the line up was exactly the same, but it was both the Finns, and they were WELL radical at the time. Funky hairdos and excellent music ("I got you" is a classic).

Does Marilyn Manson count as a band?
Or just a person?

Placebo are fucking brilliant Thumbs Up but to be fair, there's so much good and influential music beyond the mainstream stuff.

sunny day real estate
texas is the reason

two of my favourites from the 90's. Some of the songs make me shiver they are so brilliant.

Pre 1998, a band.
Some of the early 90s stuff was actually quite good.

How can we forget White Zombie? Very Happy
Faith no more?
Mr. Bungle!?

Green Day. Thumbs Up

The Offspring?

Radiohead?

May sound stupid, but Robbie Williams? Angels will be remembered for quite a long time I think.

Take That are also proving themselves quite well, especially now.

For me, The Streets are absolutely awesome and Mike Skinner is a genius when it comes to lyrics. Obviously there will be a lot of people that disagree with me here, so don't think they will be known as classics.

Spice Girls will always be remembered, maybe even in the same vein as the beatles in 30/40 years time.

To make something a classic, it has to stand the test of time, which is something the Spice Girls probably don't have. However like I said before Angels by Robbie Williams is a song that is likely to stand the test of time. As for his other songs, well that remains to be seen. Rudebox was awful by his usual standards.

Radiohead have quite a huge following and I for one like them very much.

You can actually get a strong idea of how old some of the people posting in this thread are by the answers they give.

Loving the folk that think that Madonna and RHCP are only out in the 1990's

There was an interview last year with Mig'ure ( who is a singer for all you youngsters Smile ) about the bands he wanted for the Live8 gig, and TBH he couldn't think of that many artists that he would like to play that didn't play in the origional Live Aid gig 20 odd years previously !!

Re: Split Enz, I just did some digging and they had a no. 12 UK hit with "I got you" in August 1980, and thanks to www.amazon.com I've just had a listen for 22 secs and been reminded of it Mr. Green

I was going to mention Manson as it goes

Also about the age thing and that, I know the chillis aren't really a 90's band but it wasn't really until the 90's that they began to become the house hold name they are now.

Speaking of wrong dates, for me Clapton was at his best in the 60's circa his Cream days, good music man

Led Zep are more a 70's band really - came to be in the 60's - came to rule in the 70's

Another awesome band missed is the who however I am really going off topic now....

Joe
(by the way, I was born 35 years too late - missed so much good music)

imo not that many great bands either..

only ones i can think of are already on the list..

Radiohead.
Smashing Pumpkins.

the only other band, well, artist that i'm listening to right now who i think has the "stuff" to last is Natasha Khan aka 'Bat for Lashes' so fire her on the list as well.. anyone that disagrees speak to Mr B. Hind. Wink
