Thanks for the replys folks,
Misc - it is very good for wildlife, I have taken a few shots of flowers in the garden which I will upload later (battery is dead at the minute). The only downside is that with the standard lense you can't get any serious up-close insects. Although I will be looking into getting the 90-300mm in the near future which I think can cope with that stuff. Wehave racing pigeons in the shed down the back, took a few shots as well with the high shutter speed whilst the birds are flying... got a few decent ones.
Kickstart - thanks for the advice mate, so is it a low ISO for dark photos and high ISO for daylight? I think I will invest in the 50mm lens as well I'm having something that is really bugging me at the minute, I can't get the shutter speed to full when the flash is in operation. It will only go to 200 rather than 4000 which can be very frustrating Is there anyway to turn that function off so I can set it to whatever I wish? I tried using the autofocus tonight there, although it wasn't with great sucess but I'll pick it up I'm sure.
I'll upload the photos taken tonight tomorrow night at some stage ____________________ Kawasaki Z1000 '05

The ISO rating is how sensitive the camera will be to light. The higher the number the more sensitive.
All done in "stops".
So using an aperture of f8 and a shutter speed of 1/160 gives the same amount of light as an aperture of f5.6 and a shutter speed of 1/320. Aperture is a ratio, but the steps f2.8, f4, f5.6, f8, etc, are each a doubling in the amount of light. However if you go from iso 100 to iso 200 you are doubling the sensitivity. So on the example you could keep using f8 and use a shutter speed of 1/320.

It is Canons cheapest lense and pretty good (feels very cheap and plasticky, but works well). There is also an f1.4 version (more money) and an f1.2 version (time to raid a bank money), and there used to be an f1 version (time to hold the queen to ransom, for a 2nd hand one).
Can do this with the depth of field with the f1.8.
https://www.alfa-pages.co.uk/TempPicture/VincentExhaustSmall.jpg
The wider the aperture (ie, smaller the f number) then the less the depth of field for a given lense.

That is the limit on the flash sync speed. Not really anything you can do about it (short of spending a hell of a lot more money on a pro spec camera, and even that won't gain you much, maybe push it to 1/250th). Basically the flash only works when the shutter is fully open, and at higher shutter speeds the shutter is never fully open. One edge of the shutter opens up to reveal the sensor, then the other edge follows it to cover the sensor, but at high shutter speeds the following edge doesn't have time for the leading edge to have revealed the whole sensor.

Autofocus works on recognising lines, and as such needs a fair amount of contrast. For this it needs light. My old original D30 is pretty awful for autofocus in poor light. Can be better to just resort to manual focusing in poor light.
All the best

I really want to get a decent camera. I'm getting into photography now but I just can't justify the prices of cameras! IMO and I have been told, I have an eye for a photo, just don't have the camera to finish it off!
Nice pictures though mate. |

Hi
The "castle" looks good. Slightly soft, but try sharpening it slightly in Photoshop. At the same time clone / heal out the twigs in either side. I personally think the blue sky is a nice contrast to the building.
The next one (your better half I presume) is good. Think the focus needs to be moved very slightly (with people in that situation, focus on the eyes). Looks like the zip is what you have focused on, which is 1~2" back from the eyes. Maybe use manual focus. Trouble is that the distances are so small you need both yourself and your target to be very steady while you focus and shoot.
With the sun, maybe expose it for slightly longer. Difficult to say, but I think it could do with some more detail on the landscape. Also think about moving the image up or down a bit (rule of thirds, keep the horizon close to either the 1/3 or 2/3 line). Good timing to get the shot at that time of day.
Next one similarly move the horizon. Also think about moving slightly to the right to move where the line of the stream enters the image. Maybe force the camera to focus more into the distance.
Like the one of the dandelion. Has come out a touch soft, but in that light I think you would struggle to do otherwise, and a flash would likely underexpose the background horribly. Maybe try it again in brighter light so you can use a faster shutter speed and not have to care about the flower moving.
Not sure the one of the bike has worked. Think it either needs a wider apperture and focus on the l/h switchgear to throw the background out of focus (and move slightly to the right to get the tail light out of the shot), or move back, use a small apperture and get everything in focus.
The ladybird could do with being larger. Have a play cropping the full size image to remove some of the hand / background.
The last one there are a couple of issues. Shutter speed is too slow, but it is also underexposed. Suspect this is partly because the camera is getting confused by the headlight on the bike. If you try it again, take a shot of the bridge without a bike in it, check the shutter speed / apperture and set the camera to manual mode with those settings. Then shoot the bikes. However at that kind of angle you need a fairly fast shutter speed.
Keep experimenting. You are getting there. Just watch out as it can get expensive .
All the best

Really appreciate the feedback mate I will definately take the advice on board. I'm going to that bridge again tomorrow I think so will try a few different methods. I know what you mean about it getting expensive I want one of these -
The 90-300mm lens...

Not that expensive for a lens but still pretty steep for a tightwad ____________________ Kawasaki Z1000 '05

Hi
No problem.
For lense reviews try:-
https://www.fredmiranda.com/
They don't have a listing for the 90-300 though.
I have the cheap 75-300. To be honest it does an OK job. You can get some noticeable chromatic aberation (basically caused because the lense elements bend different coloured light by slightly different amounts, shows up generally as purple fringes on high contrast edges), but it does the job. You can see the purple finging on here (fairly soft image).
You land up building up a selection as time goes on.
Worth checking Ebay and the like for 2nd hand lenses (and some camera shops deal in 2nd hand stock (eg https://www.mifsuds.com/ , who happen to have a 90-300 in for about £90). For new lenses check https://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/ for an idea of who has the cheapest prices.
All the best

Hi
To be honest I actually like the last pic of the dandelions. Looks almost like "attack of the killer dandelions". Maybe tweak the angle to get the horizon level, and move the angle to get rid of the distracting background.
First dandelion pic has too much of a distracting background, while the 2nd is suffering as the nearest one is so close that when focusing there the depth of field is too short to cover the rest, and too long to exclude them.
Plug one is novel. Maybe try it in portrait so the image is the same shape as the target.
All the best

Hi
Like the spider, although possibly could do with more depth of field to get the legs sharper (and scare people more ).
The tulip looks good. Not sure if you could crop it down a bit to move the flower slightly further in and up.
the mesh floor looks good. Would be tempted to photoshop out the light you can see in one spot. Would make it a bit more abstract.
So, you have taken pics on the Antrim cost and around Belfast Loch. Where to now?
All the best

Thanks folks!
Keith I'm going up to the NorthWest 200 on Saturday and will hopefully get the hold of a 90-200mm Sigma for the day. So I'll try and get a good few racing shots ____________________ Kawasaki Z1000 '05
