Well, ive decided to take the plunge, and get myself a car, ive been offered a civic 1.5 from my sister in law, ill probably get it for around 300, its in decent nick, but will have a decent look at it when i have the cash.

Now, just wondering how many lessons did you all do? was it easyer being on the road with a bike, (ive been on 3 years)
As im a tight arse i dont want to spend shite loads on lessons, i already know how to drive, its just the observations i may struggle with.

i know i need to do another theory Rolling Eyes but is there anything else i need to do?
My full bike licence does count as a Prov car licence?

I have no real interest in cars, so ive never really looked deeply into the procedure of it all, going to get some theory books of my mate and get that out of the way for now.

any advice would be great.

Steve.

Misc has done a similar thread in Auntie BCF.

It took 2 failed tests and 30+ lessons to pass.

I have done about 15 lessons and will be taking my test on the 22nd.
I am sure I will fail—I cannot achieve any sort of consistency because it bores me to death. I just don't enjoy waddling around in a big fat metal box. Confused

Get out of a Corsa then Laughing

To be honest I got bored and a little tired of spending money to just drive whilst waiting for the test date to arrive.

Consistency is the key Thumbs Up You could have the worlds worst driving lesson before and pass. Its how you drive with the examiner and thats all that counts.

I spent some time deliberating over becoming an instructor for the self employed status and freedom of choice. I thought for shits and giggles of little gimmicks...

...'Smart School' whereby you learn in a Smart car. Cant be bad for those parking and 3 point turns Wink Also dead cheap for me to own and insure unlike 'Scooby School' that'd be aimed at the college lads and lasses.

You may be interested to learn that as an instructor the insurance companies dont insure a WRX Turbo Laughing Could easily charge above and beyond others for the gimmick of learning in a beast of a car.

The thought of some young punk scratching or dinking my bumpers would bring me out in a cold sweat, maybe not then Wink

Surely this should be the other way round. Going from Car to Bike. As MUCH more observations are needed to pass a bike test over a car test. Like regular Looks over your shoulder.

The one big thing you need to remember on a car test is to check your mirror before you hit the brakes. And have a glance in your nearside mirror as you exit roundabouts.

Other than that, Show competence and not too much confidence.

6 lessons and passed first time. That was in 1982. I could drive before I took lessons though, learnt in my Grandads Morris Minor, double declutching and everything.

The average person takes about 45-55 hours worth of professional tuition from scratch, Only 57% of people taking their test pass. My pupils have taken from 10 hours to 100 hours and still counting. No one goes from never driven a car to passing in less than 10 hours. You get a lot of bullshitters who say how few lessons that they have taken. Ignore them. If you are worried about cost ring around, but quite often the cheep guys are the crap ones or the ones that string you out before your test. Most of my pupils pass within the first or second attempts, some take longer and it is not because they are poor drivers, it is due to how they are on the day. I had a great driver take 4 attempts and a really poor one pass first time.
I personally took eight hours of professional tuition, but ( and you must remember this ) I had a lot of hours in a car practicing with a good driver who was able to explain things correctly. It will take as long as it takes and you will know ( with a bit of guidance from your instructor ) when you are ready.

I had 4 lessons, passed first time, about 5 or 6 minors.

I had 2 instructors, both were crap. The first one wouldnt let me change gear in the second lesson, even though I could do it confidently and easily. He also refused to let me go above 30. So he got the sack.

The next one wasnt too bad for the first lesson, but on the second one he got very sarcastic and chopsy. I wasn't having that so he was sacked too.

We bought a nice 03 Clio 1.2 to replace the rustbucket astra that I had previously been driving. My dad spent about 2.5 weeks teaching me to drive and I passed. Then we sold the Clio on for more than we paid for it. If I hadn't had messed about with those jokers before it would've cost me only the cost of the driving test.

Some people give driving instructors hundreds of pounds. They're quite literally being taken for a ride.

Oh, and I learned to drive properly, including sequential gear changing (even though the powers that be frown on this, which tbh is stupid) none of this block changing rubbish.

So you did have 2.5 weeks of lessons then? ( in my book I would call that an intensive course, glad your Dad was able to teach you correctly as most can't)

Yes, I agree there are alot of instructors who wont let a pupil move at their own pace and there are alot of instructors who rip pupils off. I hope none of my pupils ever accuse me of that. Take this week for egsample. Picked up a young lad who said that he hadn't driven a car before except a mates once in a carpark. After 20 mins of going through the basics it became apparent his knowledge is far beyond that of a little go around a carpark. So I have had him doing manouvres, which he has ripped through, just need to take out a few bad habbits he has got in his normal driving, then within 10 hours he will be test ready. I think I have been fair to him and he is happy.

As regards to the sequential gear changing......... most bikers can do it and transfare that skill to driving a car, I was taught that way many years ago too. The reason why they have changed it and powers that be prefere the block changing is that many people were just putting the clutch in , keeping it in while they went down each gear, so effectively they were just coasting and not using the gears in the manner that most drivers, who are able, use sequential gears. Both are equally correct if done properly. sequential gear changes do put you in the right gear at the right time, but many can't learn that and to teach them that way may add another10-15 hours teaching and so creates that ripped off feeling again. I show the way that they want you to drive on the test and to those who I feel are able to take in the information quickly and use it properly I will teach other methods that are correct but can be fround on in some quarters.

Like I said there are some bullshitters around when talking about how many hours they have had whether it be paid or unpaid hours.

Yeah I did do 2.5 weeks training, I'm not saying I had a quick spin round a car park before jumped into the test car and passed. I've heard people saying things like that. I know I wouldn't have passed without my dad teaching me, it probably was around 10-14 hours or so in total (plus my mum taking me out as a 'learner' and falling asleep Laughing )

Still pretty good of my dad as he isn't an instructor. I suppose alot of people's parent's wouldnt be able to. Some of the driving I've seen from that generation is shocking (girlfriends mum going down the opposite direction lane at traffic lights, when the different traffic directions are separated by kerb/pavement things! Also seen her slamming up a gear instead of down, whilst cruising along at 40-50 Shocked)

Yeah I had been on the bikes for almost two years before driving, so I can see why sequential changing comes naturally to me. I've tried to block change but just can't get into it. I miss the engine braking.

Well, I started with the instructor I passed with in December and did 2 hour lessons every week untill I passed in March, so I did around 40 hours.

I'd say observations was my weakest thing too when I was learning, as the examiners WILL notice if you don't look. Where as on your bike they're less likely to notice.

Also your bike licence does double as a car provisional, just look at your counter part, it should have catagory B in the Provisional Entitlement box.

One thing I will say is don't stick with the same instructor just because you feel you have to, I had 3 instructors, the first one was hampering me, the second was ok but the 3rd I got on with the best and above all they were the cheapest and ultimately took me onto passing my test.
And I shall be doing pass plus with them in a few weeks.

It's like everything, some you get on with and thier style suites you some don't. If you are not happy then go to the next. I have had people leave me and some come to me after they have been with others. it is nice when someone recommends you to thier friends and they recommend you to thiers.
As for Pass pluss...... good on you, I wish more would do it.
