Am I the only person who thinks the whole thing just doesn't look right? There's more to this, I think.

When I first saw it on the news, I thought (and hoped - otherwise theres little hope Sad ) that it was a family member-tangled-web-abduction of some sort. Though I can't find any mention of estranged exes or anything.

Whats your take on it?

I think the fact that they think the abductor is British is that I feel our paedophilia laws are just too lenient in this country. This happens far too often.

My view is: How the fuc* can any parents leave a very young child at home on their own! Even if they were only a few hundred yards away, they were still not in the same building.

They should be prosecuted for neglect and have the other kids taken into care as they obviously can't look after them!

I put the entire blame of the girls disapearance on the parents.

Barry - I get your point, though taking their other kids into care is a little harsh.

I think there was supposed to be some kind of 'culture' there where all parents happily leave there kids while they dine. I personally thought this a little irresponsible, but not every parent would agree.

I reckon there will be very few parents willing to do this from now on, though.

But yes, there is no way on God's green earth I would leave my kids alone in a building, while I filled my face elsewhere. I'd get a bloody takeaway and stay in!

Leaving a three year old on her own while you go out for dinner? Shocked

Never in a million year's would I dream of doing such a thing, my eldest is 6 and I still wouldn't even think about it.

Ok, maybe a little harsh, but I do have a 7 year old girl myself, and seeing the way this girl went missing made my blood boil.

I do still hope they are prosecuted, whatever the outcome.

I think they have probably been punished enough by this - I doubt they'll ever let any of their kids out of their sight after this. Prosecuting them won't really benefit anyone, it's not really in the public interest is it?

I just feel very sad for them, as parents they've made a huge mistake, born out of either complacency/misplaced trust/selfishness or whatever, and regardless of the outcome they're going to regret this and beat themselves up about it for the rest of their lives.

At Easter we visited my wife's family who live on Poros, a small Saronic isle 5 mins by ferry from the mainland Peloponnese. We visited a friends house one evening for drinks and a take-away, the children aged 7-12 boys and girls, Greek, English, and Dutch played hide and seek around the houses in the little square that our friends house was in. After the second game of hide and seek they all returned except my 7 year old daughter. I asked my eldest where she was, she didn't know, in fact no-one knew. We spent the next hour trying to find her, I walked back to our apartment to see if she'd made her way "home". Everyone searched: shopkeepers, barmen, taxi drivers, police, neighbours, friends and family. Thankfully we had a happy outcome a local whose daughter spoke English well, and her husband taxi driver gave her a ride back to the apartment where my wife's cousin was waiting just in case she returned.

We were obviously very happy to have her back, and knew how close we'd perhaps come to losing her. The locals were very nonchalant about the whole thing, very "oh this is Poros, sleepy Greek fishing town, nothing bad every happens here, don't worry" They just couldn't grasp that all it takes is an opportunist paedophile to be passing a lost child/open window/unlocked door etc... and it's all over. My daughter could so easily have been on the mainland and gone within the first 10 minutes that it defies belief.

I'm not saying that the perp would have been Greek either, there are way too many British pervs trawling the world looking for an opportunity. And safe to say she doesn't enjoy that kind of "freedom" back here in England. Without sounding paranoid and anal you just have to be on your guard 24/7/365.

It's not that, so much—it's just the way they appear in all of the interviews.
They just don't appear to be...particularly distraught. I mean, the mother's very first comment to the press focused entirely on the Portuguese police. Not one mention of her daughter. No tears, nothing. Bizarre?

Her behaviour during interviews and press conferences is also odd. During the most recent press conference she blinked so much as to be conspicuous and seemed to be finding it difficult to look directly into the cameras throughout. Her tone of voice and body language did not suggest the fear and anguish that her words appeared to convey.
A family member (uncle) rang 'This Morning' this morning (believe it or not) and seemed to exude the same bizarre behaviour. He almost sounded bored Confused.

I know grief can do funny things to people, but my gut feeling here is that this whole thing stinks.

I don't know what it is, but there's definitely something not right.

Interesting points. Thinking

So, if she's not really been 'snatched', then really a motive needs to be looked at. What is there that the parents might gain from a faked kidnapping? The father is a consultant, so wouldn't assume they'd need money, so what else is a possible root of a motive? It would need to be a strong one, for even the worst parent to stoop that low.

I think it's all a bit equivocal. Perhaps we're a bit too eager for conspiracies in this day and age.

Unfortunately, since theres been no ransom demand, I fear the worst for the poor little girl Crying or Very sad

I think all this is messed up. I am thinking, what was it now, Ben Needham?

Snatched by someone looking for a child of their own?

On a side note, anyone else have an image in their mind of the parents before you found out they are both doctors?

Uh huh, me too. I pictured knuckle dragging chimps draped in Elizabeth Dukes finest.

I hope it all turns out ok and that she was taken by some oddball wanting a 'friend', but it doesnt look good

Makes me feel uneasy seeing all the news about it, my daughter is 4.

Not very nice making insinuating comments about the parents; if the worst has happened, they've just lost their three-year-old daughter for good. People react differently, and if anything, the mother looks sedated.

Paivi,

You have missed my point, I made an assumption, not an insinuation. I assumed them to be knuckle draggers. I am suprised that a well educated couple left such young kids.

It is only natural to see a situation and assume all sorts of reasons for it happening, but whatever the reason for her disappearance I just hope that they find this little girl safe and well and soon.

I wasn't referring to you but to others insinuating the parents might have had a role in this.

The only concern that I have had with it, is the fact that they left the girl relatively unattended so that they could eat dinner round the corner.

That said, before I even read this thread, several people at work (all parents) said they thought there was something a little fishy about the whole affair - although none could put their finger on it.

I have to say I find this all very worrying, we all have to watch out for ourselves, young and old. My hospital is on high security, it's the hospital that has been in the news because a nurse was raped in the toilets by the main entrance on Saturday night. We've all been told not to wander around on our own, I've already done a few trips around, but still, you don't expect bad things to happen to you, and if you're not a crazy person thinking about how you're going to attack someone then it's highly unlikely (unless you work in security) that you will consider how, when and where you could be attacked. You can't trust anyone anymore. How sad.

I hope this little girl isn't another one on our list of children being unfairly and disgustingly abused, I do think it was wrong for the parents to leave their kids while they went off for dinner, but mistakes are made, and unfortunately for their little girl they were just unlucky.

Hi, I have to agree with not leaving your kids at home on their own. I live in england and there is no way on this earth that I would do that but that's not the issue, there is a poor little girl who has been taken from her parents and she needs to be returned to them along with all the other children who are missing. People who pin point children for their derangedness need to be dealt with serverly.

I want to know if anybody lives near Distrital de Faro in Faro? Smile

I feel really sorry for the kid...the punishment that she is/was received is far worse than ether parents or absuctor will get...

WTF is wrong with the parents though????? Leaving a kid on her own in a foreign country?

According to The Times "According to a member of staff, the McCanns were so confident of safety they left the french windows to their apartment unlocked when their children were alone last Thursday week." CLICK

If they left the kid alone when on holiday, then they probably do it on a regular basis when at home....I think that this borders on abuse.

They also went back every 30 minutes....hmm, sounds like bullsh1t to me. Even if they did, then all they were doing was confirming to anyone watching the apartment that they [the abductor] had 30 minutes in which to get in, grab the girl and get away.

Once the kid has been found, then thoughts of what the parents were doing and blaming someone will enter my mind. But at the moment, I'll just remain hopeful that she is found safe and well. Karma Neutral

That's very short-sighted and naive of them; on a caravan holiday in France a few years ago I left the windows open until it went dark because of the heat. But as soon as it went dark those kids sweated cause I locked the windows, a bad night's sleep is nothing compared to an abduction. As regards whether something is "fishy" I have my doubts that there's anything amiss other than this being, with respect, just an abduction. In the most recent pics/footage the mother looks like a shell of a person, and maybe in the early days she's didn't want to believe it or was in shock, but it looks as though the weight of it has hit her now.

Has anyone thought that perhaps the kid just walked off? I mean, no sign of struggle, no parents to stop it... When I was a kid I used to go walk around in our neighbour's house cos it was never locked and I was bored and I didn't know enough about life to fear the consequences. Obviously once the kid got out the house something might have happened to it but no one can be sure it was actually abducted from the house, right? Considering the evidence I don't think it requires an immense stretch of imagination to think that the above could've happened...
