Yes, i know there's quite a few threads but they're all tailored for that specific person with the cost an all & i don't know much about the diffrent model's so..
Birthday is coming up soon & want to start getting into photography with a fairly decent camera.
Would have around 300 squid to spend & would obviously want the best camera for the money & what will be the diffrence between the certain models.
I'd be using it for a number of thing's including moving images at races, wildlife, scenery's etc.

Oh, if you could post a sample up of the camera(s) would be great.

Ta, Smile

In order of preference.

Nikon D50: Better than the D40 as your not limited as to which Nikon lenses fit! Cheap as its now been replaced by the D40.

Canon 350D, Cheap as its been replaced by the 400D

Olympus E500, if you must buy an olympus, then here is a cheaper link (though it just comes with the one lens). Not my first choice as imo the Nikon and the Canon are the best bet due to the better range of lenses that can be had for them.

Thanks for the help guys, but obviously being a newb, to me they all look the same lol. I've heard good thing's about the 350D but wouldn't be able to stretch the extra amount for one. Wouldn't the Olympus be better then the Nikon seeing as it has more mega pixel's?

Can you explain a bit more about the diffrence's between the camer'a as i've just had a look at some sample pic's & they all look great & it's hard to tell the diffrence.

I've used all my karma for today.: (

Hugely detailed review of all 3 cameras.

https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond50/
https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/olympuse500/
https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos350d/
Spec of 3 side by side.
https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=nikon_d50%2Coly_e500%2Ccanon_eos350d&show=all

I would choose the the Canon or the Nikon over the Olympus just because of the 2x crop factor and the better selection of lenses that you can get for the Canon and the Nikon. I don't think there is much in it between 6mp and 8mp there is more to quality than just the number of mega pixels. You can get 12mp cameras off ebay for 60 squid, but they won't match any of the above cameras in terms of quality. 6mp will comfortably produce A4 prints.

Great link, i'm edging towards the Nikon D50 now, is that a special offer on the site because i've looked elswhere & it's a 100 quid more?

Just looking at Silver's photo's & there brilliant, is this the type of quality these camera's produce?

Silver has an EOS 1D MarkII, they come in at slighly more than your 300 squid budget (over 2.5k more!). However thats not to say that you can't take good pics with an entry level DSLR.

Don't think the D50 is a special offer, its just cheap as they have replaced it with the D40, though I still reckon the D50 is a superior camera due to being compatible with all of the Nikon lenses unlike the D40.

I have a D50 and at the mo. it does pretty much everything i need. I am slowly building up a decent set of lenses with it and at some point I will shell out for a D200, however its doing a great job for now and I'm really pleased with it.

Trying to do a bit of a photoblog with my pics at the mo. Not taken any for a couple of weeks now though due to crap weather or being at work.

Hi

Not much wrong with the Olympus, but you are limited in choice of lenses (and the cost of a long lense would really make your eyes water).

Whether you go Nikon or Canon is up to you. Both have good points. Neither make is consistantly better than the other (and whichever is better this month will have been leapfrogged with a better model from the other next month).

The number of mp is pretty irrelevant. 3mp will easily produce an A4 print. The number of mp is just really marketing related, something easy for them to crow about (remember that the camera is doing all sorts of bodging to get a colour image, as each pixel is only detecting the amount of one single colour).

In some ways I would be tempted to spend less on the camera and more on lenses. For example you can pick up a Canon D30 for not that much. Autofocus is nowhere near as good as the more modern cameras, but image quality is very good and it is FAR better built than a Canon 350D / 400D / Nikon D50.

All the best

Keith

Very interesting, although now i'm a little but baffled as to what to do with a camera now as i really don't know much about any of them & i had my mind set on the NikonD50 & now the Cannon D30 has popped up.
Would there be much difference between the two then? And are there lens's that would benefit me most as i'm guessing they're not cheap to buy so could probably only do a couple.

Divuk, i like your blog, some very nice pics.

Thanks for the help.

Hi

In many ways the D50 is a better camera, but it is small and quite plasticy. The D30 when new was well over £2000, but that was about 6 years ago, but they are cheap and for most uses would give you a very good picture. Just really a thought. Might be worth finding one of the local bods who is into photography and getting some help and having a play with their camera.

Lenses vary greatly. Cheapest Canon lense is about £70. Most expensive is about 1000x the price (1200mm f5.6, occasionally made to order). Depending on what you are shooting you will need different lenses. Trackside I tend to use either a 70-200 f2.8 or a 120-300 f2.8, sometimes with a 1.4 extender on them (well, have been known to play silly buggers with an 8mm lense). Neither are that cheap, but a 75-300 f4~5.6 will take acceptable photos. If you are shooting landscapes then you need far shorter (wide angle) lenses. Portraits somewhere in between (use a wide angle lense for portraits and the subject really won't thank you for their distorted features).

All the best

Keith

Interestingly, many (including myself) preferred the D50 over the 350D and the D40 as the D50 was bigger (its also not plasticy unless your comparing it to a D2X!). Thats not to say its huge, buts its a more standard size for a DSLR. The smaller cameras are more uncomfortable/fiddly to use and don't work as well with the chunky pro lenses.

As Kickstart says, there are some great deals to be had on second hand kit. Have a search for a local second hand camera store and go have a look what they have to offer. Buying from a retailer should get you some kind of warranty, unlike feebay etc.

Know plenty find the 350D too small, but a D30 dwarfs it. Physically bigger than the Nikon D200 I think.

All the best

Thanks once again for the help people, still got a few weeks so plenty of time to look around & learn more. Keith, all those diffrent lens's & numbers baffle me but i'm sure i'll learn with time.
Do you know of any decent photography forums?
Lastly, with the right lens, could you get a good visual on the moon if it's a clear enough night?
Thumbs Up

Hi

The numbers do vaguely make sense. Once you get used to them.

This was taken with a Canon 100-400mm lense.

Thanks for that, would love to eventually get a lens (first a camera, obviously) that could give me a view like that. Thumbs Up

I started with a 300d and the 70-300 canon lens. Got some good motorsport resluts, some of the prints are still on the wall infront of my desk!

I'll give it a look, cheers.
Think i've settled on a camera Nikon D40 + AF-S DX 18-55 mm F3.5-5.6G ED II which is £329.99 new, was looking at the D50 but this seems like a much better camera being easier to use an all.
Sound O.K?

Cheers.

Hi

As mentioned elsewhere, the D40 is more restrictive over the lenses that can be used than the D50.

I think by the time i've started to use more then a few lens's i'll probably upgrade the camera anyway. Still got a few weeks yet so will keep on looking but the Nikon is looking like the best choice.

Hi

Remember the lenses the D50 can use more easily are the older ones that can be picked up cheaper 2nd hand. And a D50 is likely to be cheaper to buy.

All the best

I've decided on the D50, also heard that most of the newer lens's don't have auto focus with the D40?
Cheers keith, very helpful. Smile
