Yes, i know there's quite a few threads but they're all tailored for that specific person with the cost an all & i don't know much about the diffrent model's so..
Birthday is coming up soon & want to start getting into photography with a fairly decent camera.
Would have around 300 squid to spend & would obviously want the best camera for the money & what will be the diffrence between the certain models.
I'd be using it for a number of thing's including moving images at races, wildlife, scenery's etc.
Oh, if you could post a sample up of the camera(s) would be great.

Great link, i'm edging towards the Nikon D50 now, is that a special offer on the site because i've looked elswhere & it's a 100 quid more?
Just looking at Silver's photo's & there brilliant, is this the type of quality these camera's produce?

Silver has an EOS 1D MarkII, they come in at slighly more than your 300 squid budget (over 2.5k more!). However thats not to say that you can't take good pics with an entry level DSLR.
Don't think the D50 is a special offer, its just cheap as they have replaced it with the D40, though I still reckon the D50 is a superior camera due to being compatible with all of the Nikon lenses unlike the D40.
I have a D50 and at the mo. it does pretty much everything i need. I am slowly building up a decent set of lenses with it and at some point I will shell out for a D200, however its doing a great job for now and I'm really pleased with it.
Trying to do a bit of a photoblog with my pics at the mo. Not taken any for a couple of weeks now though due to crap weather or being at work.

Hi
Not much wrong with the Olympus, but you are limited in choice of lenses (and the cost of a long lense would really make your eyes water).
Whether you go Nikon or Canon is up to you. Both have good points. Neither make is consistantly better than the other (and whichever is better this month will have been leapfrogged with a better model from the other next month).
The number of mp is pretty irrelevant. 3mp will easily produce an A4 print. The number of mp is just really marketing related, something easy for them to crow about (remember that the camera is doing all sorts of bodging to get a colour image, as each pixel is only detecting the amount of one single colour).
In some ways I would be tempted to spend less on the camera and more on lenses. For example you can pick up a Canon D30 for not that much. Autofocus is nowhere near as good as the more modern cameras, but image quality is very good and it is FAR better built than a Canon 350D / 400D / Nikon D50.
All the best

Hi
In many ways the D50 is a better camera, but it is small and quite plasticy. The D30 when new was well over £2000, but that was about 6 years ago, but they are cheap and for most uses would give you a very good picture. Just really a thought. Might be worth finding one of the local bods who is into photography and getting some help and having a play with their camera.
Lenses vary greatly. Cheapest Canon lense is about £70. Most expensive is about 1000x the price (1200mm f5.6, occasionally made to order). Depending on what you are shooting you will need different lenses. Trackside I tend to use either a 70-200 f2.8 or a 120-300 f2.8, sometimes with a 1.4 extender on them (well, have been known to play silly buggers with an 8mm lense). Neither are that cheap, but a 75-300 f4~5.6 will take acceptable photos. If you are shooting landscapes then you need far shorter (wide angle) lenses. Portraits somewhere in between (use a wide angle lense for portraits and the subject really won't thank you for their distorted features).
All the best

Thanks once again for the help people, still got a few weeks so plenty of time to look around & learn more. Keith, all those diffrent lens's & numbers baffle me but i'm sure i'll learn with time.
Do you know of any decent photography forums?
Lastly, with the right lens, could you get a good visual on the moon if it's a clear enough night?

Thanks for that, would love to eventually get a lens (first a camera, obviously) that could give me a view like that. |

I think by the time i've started to use more then a few lens's i'll probably upgrade the camera anyway. Still got a few weeks yet so will keep on looking but the Nikon is looking like the best choice.
