My NSR.............

de-restricted and upjetted to Alains suggestions and it will scrape just under 90mph in 6th gear at 10k revs.

I looked in the oil pump and on full throttle the notch goes way beyond where its supposed to. Also, my sparky recently died and was very oil fouled. Changed that though and now it runs no problems just not as fast as it should be.

The oil pump positioning CANT be changed and i really don't understand why. I've put the adjusting screws at the bottom and top of the thread (and made sure they're fully tight) but it doesn't change the position of the notch at all.

Oh and also, with the new jets it doesn't perform as well before the powerband kicks in and it only starts to show any sort of acceleration after 8k revs!

The throttle does feel stiff but i can't work out why!!!

just had mine done too, but i got an indicated 97mph at 10,000 rpm in 6th, and there was still more to go. I have done everything but fit a new exhaust, and it is sweet as a nut. Accelleration nearly pulls my arms off. I get 40mph in 1st, up to the red line.

this is what i done to de-restrict.

1. Removed baffle from exhaust header
2. Removed baffle from behind carb
3. Up jetted carb
4. New chain and sprockets
5. Fitted carbon reeds
6. Modified the airbox (this mainly makes it sound more gutsy)

But it like a different machine, and really fekking quick. The only reason i did not go any quicker, is because the front end started to feel really light at 97, and i was shitting myself a bit Laughing

your throttle cable has a spliter in the middle , a part goes to the oil pump the other to the carb . if you cannot adjust your pump it's may be because the cable is too long now . it's not a great expense , try a new one . also your throttle needle is probably on the middle notch and with upjetting it's better to it at the 2nd notch from top . if you're still too rich download my file https://www.geneva-racing.com/~alains/NSRtips.doc apply openning air box (way 3) page 13

I have adjusted the throttle needle and it is now on the second notch. I'll check out the throttle cable later on but something's definatly not right. Both the exhaust restriction and carb restriction are off but i get the feeling the previous owner may have ragged it. Any easy way i can check compression?

Cheers

I used Alain's jet suggestion, and I have to be honest, it didn't work for me. Fully derestricted, but all parts stock. Did a decoke to make sure, but the engine had much less life than it did before. It wouldn't pull in 6th gear anywhere near as good as it did previously.

My advice is to leave the jets as they were - Honda did not design the bike to be rejetted after derestricing. The only time you need to do that is if you start changing the air filter and/or exhaust system.

As for the needle, altaring it's height changes the midrange, whereas the main jet changes the fuel flow at full throttle/high revs. Lowering the needle will reduce fuel flow, much like putting in a smaller 'midrange jet'.

I changed back to stock jets and had the power back as it was, a big improvement.

Here is an excellent guide to carbs and what the different parts do: https://justkdx.dirtrider.net/printcarbtuning.html Always start from stock settings before attempting tuning so you have a reference if you need to revert back.

Who me? Well it hasn't in 14k miles, so I don't think it will, not for that reason anyway Wink

Maybe I should fit the conical air filter I have and refit the larger jets Thinking
