Ok, i know this is fundemental but . . . .

What is the best way to setup the back wheel exactly the same on both sides, because the marker on the axel seems to be incredibly innaccurate, i.e depending on where you are looking from, it can be on 1.5 notches, or 1.9 notches. do you see what i mean?

So whats the best way of alligning the back wheel, a foolproof way?

I had it setup perfect i thought, but looked again and it was different on both sides depending on where i was looking, i tried to be at exactly the same spot on both sides, but how do you know? without some kind of marker lol am i going to have to mathmatically divide up my garage.

Thanks

get a piece of string twice the length of the bike.

straighten up the front wheel and wrap the string around the front of the wheel, so the string is along either side of the bike

bring the ends of the string to the back of the back wheel on either side of the tyre and pull tight

look at the gap between the string and the back of the front tyre and adjust the back wheel until this gap is equal either side of the front tyre

crap description but its cheap and works

And when you've got your wheel alignment sorted, when you adjust the chain, just adjust using equal turns on both sides, thereby keeping the wheel in alignment. The markers on the swingarm are generally not very accurate.

Get a vernier caliper. You can get a cheap digital one between £20-30 and it will be more accurate than you need.

Hi

Hold a scaffold pole against the side of the rear wheel and compare its position at the front of the bike with the front wheel. Then do the same on the other side of the rear wheel. And fiddle with the adjusters to get it even. The marks on the swinging arm are not likely to be at all accurate.

Once it is in like I just make certain I turn the adjusters on each side the same number of flats.

All the best

Keith

Thanks for the replies people, i have adjusted the chain before, but only today realised how completely innacurate the marks on the swingarm are, i`ll try the string thing tomorrow.

Worlds most boring adjustment.

Push wheel all the way to the back of the slot.

For every sixth of a turn on the left make a sixth of a turn on the right (so the flat of the nut is always at the top!)

Takes forever the first time you do it and its tempting to cut corners but once its done its not a big problem to keep adjusted.
