MOT questions

[Resurrection]

First off.

I had a load of electircal problems a while back and i never bothered putting bulbs back into my sidelights.

Is this going to be an MOT fail or will i need to go get some bulbs?

The main bulb and headlight works and has high beam setting.

Secondly my speedo cable snapped a while ago.

Is this a fail?

I think they say ALL lights that are fitted have to work, cant you just take the side lights off for MOT, not sure about your speedo cable, but you have that digital one on there don't you?

I think your sidelights are fine as long as your main light has normal light and high beam.

As to Speedo cable, i think a working speedo is required, not 100% on that but im pretty sure.

if lights are fitted the must work

think the speedo it a failure too as its fitted it has to work

but not many places actually check the speedo

its a weird some of the rules they have i know its not bikes but my dads landrover had seat belts fitted and 1 of them didnt work so it failed even though they dont have to be fitted as its ancient he took them out and it passed crazy eh

might be worth just taking the lights off for mot if you can

i don't have any odd bulbs, mine are normal, some have lips some don't

No requirement for a working speedo. It's not tested on the MOT. I specifically asked the guy who MOTs my bikes this and it has been MOTed for the last three years without a working speedo (there isn't even a speedo drive on the wheel).

The light's will fail if they aren't working. You should get away with taping them up for the MOT (stick gaffa tape or similar over the lens) because it does have a proper light anyway. Asking your MOT tester beforehand is the best bet though because in my experience, many of them make up non-existant rules to suit themselves.

My bike failed for not having sidelights, just got a couple of white LED's and used them instead as I didn't have the original bulb holders. Wedged in place usinga couple of rubber grommets and some insulating tape.

I was working on the assumption that there is a position light in the 'main' headlamp unit on that bike. There is certainly a space for one. That'll have to have a working bulb in it.

The two additional lights are surplus to requirements but if they are fitted and unmasked they will be expected to work.

A working speedo has never been part of the MOT test. It is not classed as dangerous because the rider/driver should always drive to the conditions regardless and the speed limit is only a limit, it doesn't mean that it is safe to drive at that speed at that time anyway. Dangerous is things like bolts missing out of brake calipers, tyre worn down to its cords etc, things that are likely to cause danger to yourself or others that you have no direct control over.

I'm quite certain i know my speed by the gears and revs.

Plus i go through the speed boards telling you your speed under the limit or on it etc when i want.

It's illegal to misrepresent the mileage when selling a bike. You would be required to make the buyer aware of any discrepancy between what the odometer reads and what the true mileage is.

This is usually done by putting a sticker reading "Mileage not garaunteed accurate" over the odometer. It is also worth writing this into the bill of sale which you both sign.

My gpz400r has a sidelight switch but no sidelights fitted. Its passed all 3 MOTS ive put it in for with no problems and no recomendation.

Aye, the trouble is you can clearly see the hole in the reflector for the sidelight bulb when you look at the headlamp on that bike.
