Got a bike recently, did it while meeting half way with the seller, he filled out the details in the V5C for me, gave me the slip, then I parted with my cash, but in all the rush he just buggered off and said he'd post the V5C tomorrow. He gave me an MOT cert though. I checked that the VIN number matched upw tiht he logbook quickly, but...

We both just buggered off, I gave him my bike in PX, (told him to get a new logbook at the DVLA for it as I had lost mine)..Anyway, not only did I part with my cash, I parted with my previous bike too which TBH was a heap of crap.

Problem is... No receipt of sale, and he seemed a bit dodgey when I called him earlier and asked for his address. He avoided the question. Oh crap where do I stand over this?

Clocks HAVE Been changed, as well as ignition, some side panels and other bits.

Take it to the police station and ask them if it is stolen Very Happy
Is the number you have for him a mobile or landline?

I have his landline and mobile.

PS. I have no insurance or tax on it and have no other means to take it to the police station at this point.

Edit: I also should mention that I first said that I'd drop by his place to have a look and pick it up, but he then insisted that he "be nice" and come out half way, and quickly changed the subject.

If you have the slip as you say, just wait a couple of weeks and see if the log book comes, I cant see him giving you a landline number if he didnt want to be got hold of, maybe he just doesnt want strangers at his home.

No offence mad, but you do seem a bit of a worrier, like i said chill out for a week or so and see if the log book comes, or just HPI the bike if you are that worried.

Well you could phone the cops with the number and VIN.
Maybe the RAC pr AA can help if you are a member.
At least with a landline number he can be traced if he has done one on you.

I do not want people that I do not trust looking at the bikes at my place. I have about £15000 worth of bikes just waiting for some bad boys to lift if I am not careful.

Cheers, yeah Guv I'm definitely a worrier. It's a family genetic thing or something, being done over in the past so many times.

It's just if he has done one on me, there's nothing I can do, is there? Considering he can just say "he stole it!".

But why the fuck would I have the V5C/2 new keeper's slip and the recently MOT certificate if I stole it.

Apart from not getting a receipt I don't see a problem. IT's his responsibility to send off the reg documents and if anything he should worry about having your bike without them. Also, if you have used your old bike on the road you should have got a replacement V5 because you are now legally responsible for it's taxation until it's re-registered.

If the land line number works ? Then it can be traced by the police to an adress and if the bike is stolen then they know were he was from, they would then pay him a visit and take it from there.

Ok but what if it isn't stolen, and say for example it's a scam he pulls.

The bike was "recovered stolen", that much I know, which makes me a little more suspicious.

Like put it this way, I don't know where the guy lives, so I couldn't match up the V5C with his address, nor do I know exactly if the name was legit on the V5C. It was just all totally rushed.

So like what if he sells it on, then just pisses off, a few weeks later reports it stolen and then they whip the bike off me because he tips them my address (he knew my address because I told him to drop some part offs at next weeks).

So then, they return the bike to him, and he got my cash in his pocket and rinses and repeats the scam. He could possibly prey on new bikers like myself and target them specifically for this type of scam.

So what I'm trying to say is that if he tried to pull that scam on me, just by me having the new keeper's slip, does that at all give me a chance to defend myself and say "Why the fuck would I have this slip if I stole it. I'd have taken the whole fuckin logbook".. Technically I could still get my bike back, but it ain't worth much, and I payed 80% in CASH.

Probably a bit dodgy in some way but not stolen IMHO. He could be a dealer avoiding a bit of tax or unloading bikes not fully roadworthy that he could not be bothered sorting for the showroom.
Then again you sold him a bike that you knew to be pants so it would seem that there are no pure souls in this story.

Well my bike was an RG125, it was on its way out, so I basically just gave it to him for 150 quid, and it passed it's mot anyway not too long ago. He knew what he was getting and said "I'll just break it apart", hence why I didn't bother getting the v5 filled in for it as he said so himself he was going to rip it apart and tbh he didn't seem to care about whether or not I had any documents with it, he just wanted to leave with it and my cash.

How are the DVLA going to know it's scrapped if there's no log-book sent off to tell them? As far as they are aware the vehicle is still being kept on the road untaxed - in your name.

FUCKKKKKkKKKKKK!!!

So it all comes back on me, does it? What a crappy experience I've had recently. My first bike, works fine for a few days then craps on itself (I rode safetly and sensibly on it), and then, I need a new bike and go and empty my bank account. I find this guy who has what I want, and call him. He "i'll meet you half way" speech, and I reluctantly agree.

Well I suppose I know what my next move is, but I need to still hold back and use my old bike as a tool just in case. IE. Report it stolen if all helll breaks loose.

Is that a good idea if he does me over, to report it stolen, and give them his home number? As far as I'm concerned he took the bike outta my back garden!

Personally I would apply for a log book for the old bike then send it off with the new owner's details. You'll have to pay of course but it's cheaper than a £80 fine. I certainly wouldn't make a false report of theft and risk getting nicked for wasting police time.

Ok Geri, but I dno't know this guys personal details and he won't give them to me. All I know is the name he gave me and what was on the V5C for the bike I got off him, but I can't remember the address my memory is crap because he said he'd "post it" himself, so he has the v5c with him (for the bike I got off him).

For the old bike, a letter sent to the DVLA explaining you are no longer the registered keeper should be fine and you don't have to pay.

I very much doubt it's any kind of 'scam' involving him claiming you stole his bike - as it'd start to look quite sus that he has your bike - and I presume this bike was advertised for sale at some point as well etc.
(Or he'd have to go to hassle to get rid of your bike, etc, etc)

Ah yes, and his phone number (land line) is listed on the classifieds that he is selling on. I suppose I'll wait and see how this unfolds and I'll post again about this if it turns nasty.

It's quite right for him to keep the V5C and give you the slip, that is the proper way. The onus is on him to send it off.

As G said a letter to the DVLA would do but probably not much good if you don't have his address. I would explain the story in the letter and give them his name and phone numbers and send it recorded.

if you dont recieve the v5 form for your bike (one you have bought) then you can contact the dvla and send them your details that you have this bike, this will then register it with yourself, also with regard to the other bike you gave him if it was used for anything illegal as it is not registered in his name then you will get the blame so while you are on the phone i think a meantion that you have sold the bike on but dont know the address of the current owner but have a number and name will just notify them that it is no longer in your care, also let them know you have informed him to apply for a log book as you had misplaced yours. I hope it all goes well, o by the way what did you buy then?

I tend to agree. This guy probably won't win any prizes for customer service but I can see no reason to suspect it's stolen from what you've said.

He does keep the V5, you do only get the slip.

I agree it's a bit odd he doesn't want you to come to his house or know the address but there could be a million reasons for that.

He had the v5, not many stolen bikes have them...

It's quite ''normal'' for bike sellers (Particularly offroad) to sell at a location other than their home due to security risks.

He's probably a dealer and has had an incident where a theif pretends to be interested in a bike but, is only checking out the premesis.

Theives will often look at bike forums as well.
