If i try and start my NSR in first gear with the clutch in, the bike jerks forward.

Perhaps your not supposed to start like this but id have thought if the clutch was in, the gears would be in neutral and it wouldn't make that much difference.

I've also found if i start in neutral and pop it into first, it will still jerk forward.

Is this a normal thing or is there something wrong.

Try adjusting the clutch cable, you will find two adjusters on the cable, one at each end !

I don't have much experience on nsr's, but I'm sure it shouldn't jump forward when you start it with the clutch in, the engine should be disengaged. However, it may afaik jump forward when you put it into first, but only very slightly. My R6 does this, don't ask me why, but it does.

Might be worth having a play with the adjusters on your clutch and if that doesn't help, maybe have a look at the actual clutch.

My bike jumps forward a little, only if it's not warmed up though. Does it do it if it's been idling for like 5mins?

It shouldn't do it if you rev the engine a little when you are engaging first gear too.

Adjust ya clutch then. Your manual will tell you how to do it, there's probably a few websites that will too. Adjust it with the adjusters next to the lever.

Remeber the biting point will move though, don't do what I did and try and pull away fast, and just get a loud NEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHH!

The cable is loose.

Hold the clutch lever in, get down at the wheel and look for two nuts, tighten them up hand tight, let go of the lever and try tighening them a bit more hand tight, that should do it.

erm, Im not trying to be funny but, where am i looking for the two nuts?

Mine jumps forward a little... more especially if you change gear without pulling the clutch in. Razz (stationary)

Dunno if there's anything wrong it might just be normal.

If the chain is loose it will also jump when dropped into first. Make sure the chain is adjusted properly.

You might have to take the fairing off yours, mine you dont need to (or just chop my cable ties :p)
On the right hand side, it goes onto the engine casing, you will see it if you pull the lever in and out, its like a bracket about a inch long, and the 2 nuts are at the top of the bracket.
This is hard to explain, follow your clutch cable from the clutch lever and you wil find what im on about.
Somoene might be able to explain it better. Smile

Cheers mate, ill have a look, see whats what.

and ill adjust the chain too while in on my knees, i know it needs doing, didnt think it would affect that though. Cheers McJam.

Try pumping the clutch lever a few times and giving the engine a slight rev while the clutch is in and the bike is in neutral.

Its just the plates sticking togrther.

If i was you i would tear my clutch apart and inspect the plates for wear, warpage, burns etc. and then put it back up. Don't forget to use mutligrade viscosity gear oil for wet clutch systems.

Hi

Most bikes I have owned have had the clutch drag a little. Can be made worse by the wrong gearbox oil, clutch adjustment, wear in the clutch basket (the "arms" on the basket get small ridges worn in them from the plates causing the plates to start to stick), etc.

Will the bike actually start in gear with the clutch pulled?

Adjust the clutch cable first. Easy to do and the most likely cause. If that fails then change the gearbox oil, and if that fails inspect the clutch basket and plates.

All the best

Keith
