Okay, im sick of looking now.

I have been looking for a while to replace my PC and dont know where to look. Dell seem to have the right idea, were you can add bits and pieces as you want untill you think, oh shit thats a bit too expensive and have to take some stuff back off.

I got an eMachines thingy from dixons a while back and im thinking its abit out of date.

Intel Celeron 1.3 GHz
256Mb Ram (2 x 128 - no space to add more)
some shity built in intel grafix card but i added a "Sparkle" nvidia GeForce MX440 64Mb card.
DVD
CD-RW

I also have a laptop that id like to get rid of.
AMD Duron 900MHz
128MB Ram
DVD/CD

Any ideas? Should i attempt to upgrade (not much space for extras ie memory) Should I buy a new one. I dont need most of the shite that retailers sell with there PCs. I have keyboards, mice, tonnes of software etc so im just after the basic PC and a bigger monitor would be good.

NB
This is a request for info at the moment not exchange and mart
Smile

Sounds like you want a barebones system of some sort. Check out places like https://www.overclockers.co.uk for components.

You'll probably need at least:

Case
Power supply
Mobo
CPU
RAM
Graphics card

And probably a nice 240GB HD. Smile

Try CCL Computers: https://www.cclcomputers.com

(Online Store>>Configurable Systems)

You could just get a new motherboard, CPU and RAM. No point buying an entire new system if you don't need to.

<edit> Smile

He'll also more than likely require a more powerful PSU for most of the latest (not necessarily fastest) CPUs. In which case, he might also need a new case.

He mentioned he's got an extra graphics card as it is.

You can get some fairly decent Motherboards with built in stuff for not to much now-a-days.

What are you going to be using your upgraded-PC for?

Are you running out of hard disk space on your current pc?

Is it just me or is trying to work out what goes with what and what will fit were just so friggin' confusing!

Id be happy sticking with my nVidia GeForce MX440 but i'm not sure how much longer thats going to be good enough. 64Mb is ok for now but what kind of spec are games like HL2 going to need.

ideally id like

Fast as phuk processor
Much Ram as poss (got 2x 256Mb at the moment)
bigger monitor

i got no room in my current MB for more memory but i guess i could buy 2x 512's

not sure what processor would fit in this current MB

Monitor not a huge problem as far as compatability is concerned

I assume that you mean Gb? Smile Even if you did, that really isn't *that* much by today's standards...unless you store your pr0n on a different medium. Rolling Eyes

Anyway, you can get a pretty fast Athlon for about £60, plus a mobo for £60, plus 512Mb of RAM for £60. A case + CPU can probably be had for about £50-80 (probably less).

In terms of your graphics card - unless you want to run the very latest 3D-intensive games at 1024 + resolution, you should be ok with the 440Mx until the latest cards drop in price. Having said that, you can get very decent ATI/nVidia cards for less than £100 nowadays.

<< has the 440. Not that bad a card but it's not like i use the pc for that much on games. or the games i do play are pretty old to be honest.

Wouldnt mind an upgrade to a 2ghz instead of the 1300 i have now.
But for a full system from a mate that cost me £150 who can complain.

I got a GB of RAM on eBay for £70 including postage from the US.

Got an Athlon XP 2400, fancy cooler and a suitable motherboard (with USB 2.0) from ebuyer.com for a couple of quid short of £100.

Kept the original case and PSU cos it was compatible. Might do something about the graphics card someday but no rush.

Something like that. I didn't work it out myself, I grabbed John in the chat room, told him my budget and set him to work.

2400... faster than 750 that was in there before Smile

Probably closer to 2Ghz, maybe 2.2Ghz. The numbering of the chips are somewhat misleading.

The Athlon chips are numbered according to their equivalent Pentium chips clock speed. So....an Athlon 2400 is as fast as a pentium 2.4GHz but will actually run at around 2.2GHz.

I got a chip for sale on ebay, probably worth a bid. It's new and un-used, but still be cheaper than shops/internet.

It's a P4 2.4Ghz. The 533mhz FSB model.

check it out

eBay is definitely the way forward. I bought a pc for £430 from eBay recently. I was going to buy the parts and build it myself. In total the parts would have cost me close to £600.
