Now that I've finished uni I have a bit of spare time to do things on the bike. I decided that i'd clean the downpipes and exhaust today as it's been bugging me how grubby they've looked for ages.

So I took off the belly pan, bought some wire wool and Autosol and set about them:

Hornet minus belly pan.

Tarnished downpipes.

One side cleaned, the other awaiting cleaning. Bit of a difference!

Finished!

Belly pan back on.

I'm dead chuffed with how it's come out Mr. Green

*Note to self: Get some autosol and wire wool and clean downpipes*

I like your bellypan a lot more than mine. And I just love those headlights. Wish I could afford them instead of the big old lump. Rolling Eyes

Question by the way, but how are the lights for when riding at night? Better, worse? Any difference? Just remembered my bike instructor said that some aftermarket lights tend to be shit.

Nice Hornet btw. Thumbs Up Though I prefer blue with matched wheels Very Happy

not biased at all of course

Haha depends if I can get the twin chrome dominators like MarkJ has. If I know I could get them by a certain time and could fit them easily then yes I would.

They're spot on Thumbs Up Unfortunately I've never used the standard Hornet headlight as mine came with the dominators already, but I can't really fault them. Only problems I've had is that the insides of the lenses were covered in condensation when I got them, so a quick wipe around the inside with windowlene on kitchen roll sorted that out. Then bought some 60% Xenon bulbs and they're excellent Very Happy. The quality of the finish is brilliant too - I was fully expecting them to tarnish/rust to buggery when I got them. Been through winter with them and they're still as shiny as ever.

Only problem I've had with them is the passing light - having twice the headlight bulbs than the Hornet is supposed to have, when you press the passing light (both dipped and full filaments on) it used to blow the original 10A fuse. Replaced with a 20A one and it's fine.

How can you afford the Hornet at Uni? I'm far too skint to have a bike atm.
Top work on those downpipes mind!

Excellent. *starts saving up* xenon bulbs eh...

Man I just actually love twin headlights so much. Yours and Type_Mo's bikes are sexyful.

Hornets FTW Wink

And about changing the fuse, would seem a bad idea. I think it would be better to just switch to main beam and back quickly to stop blowing the fuse.

Oh and a question, a few weeks ago the battery went kaput on my Hornet so I had to buy a new one. The thing is, even though the battery doesn't hold it's charge, should it not be able to actually run the bike? A friend jump started it with his car and it was running fine till he unplugged it and it started dying. Could it be something due with the regulator/rectifier? I've no idea.

Bought it when I was on my work placement year. No way could I afford it when I went back to uni! Laughing

The 20A isn't a fantastic idea I know. I replaced it cos it pissed me off when the 10A popped when I tried it, so replaced it with a 20A. I haven't actually used the passing light since, but it's nice to know that if I do accidentally hit the passing light I won't have to faff around putting a new fuse in.

Sounds a bit of a strange one molotov. When it died as soon as it was unplugged from his car, were the lights on? I drained my battery last week due to leaving the lights on whilst fixing an electrical problem which drained the battery. I bump started it myself down the road, ran it without the lights on so I could fill up for petrol 1 mile away. Once I got back on the bike at the petrol station it wouldn't start again. Once I bumped it I went for a 60mile run - now works fine, so maybe you didn't charge it for long enough? I'd personally check there's enough acid in the battery, give it a good overnight charge and I'd think it should work then. Thumbs Up

Nope. Didn't l;eave the lights on and the battery wasn't holding any charge. And I can't check for acid levels as it's sealed. When I got home I put it on the charger for over 24 hours and put it back on the bike. So still nothing. Battery had died. So had to fork out 40 quid for a new one.

Still think there was something wrong with the reg/rec as it jut wouldn't run without anything.

So did this £40 new battery work? If not it could be the reg/rec, or you might have an electrical short somewhere.

Do you have a Haynes manual for it?

The new one worked fine, started up first time with lights on and everything. And I got the original Honda manual but no Haynes.

I jst thought that with bikes, even if the fuse is blown while riding there should be enough charge in the battery to actually be able to ride the bike.

Oh right so everything works fine with the new battery?

I think the bike should run OK without a battery, but when my last one went, it would sometimes stall the bike straight after starting it if I didn't get moving

Ok cool. It's just with my 125 the battery was pretty much dead all the time, wasn't holding it's charge yet I could still use it. Thought it'd be the same with bigger bikes. I know that being the bigger engine it'd need more charge but meh.

So did I to be honest, so I tried it on a small patch of the exhaust under the sump first - no scratches at all. I used the fine grade wire wool (bought from Halfords in a pack of 5 - 2 fine, 2 medium 1 coarse). Just put a bit of Autosol on a cut out piece of the wool and scrub the downpipes with it. Takes a bit of effort but you get used to it. Probably took me an hour max to get the exhaust like that. I went all the way under the sump but that part didn't look as impressive.

It won't scratch.
The Stainless that the pipes are made of is "Harder" than the wire wool.

"00000" (five O) grade wire wool for polishing.

After seeing this thread, I guess I really took the easy way out...

I recently bought new stainless steel downpipes because the existing mild steel ones resembled swiss cheese. I particularly didn't want the pipes to get tarnished, (but I'm also quite lazy when it comes to ongoing maintenance) so I used some of this to make sure the colour stayed consistent. Rolling Eyes Embarassed

Tell me you still have the old pipes so you can polish them and then them nice again!!

Though saying that, being mild steel they can corrode on the surface BAD. When i had a 50 the mild steel looked Embarassed Sick
