Hi,

I've noticed recently that when I drop it in to 2nd at high-ish revs (agressive corner or whatever) the rear slides to the right.

Bike: NSR125
Tyres: Rear has developed a few "nicks" between my chicken strips but the tread is still deep

Is this normal?

Cheers

Silva

You are probably running out of RPMs

Changing down too fast.

10000 in third then dropping into 2nd could send the engine into orbit.

Use the brakes until you can match the enging to the road speed.

Its not that bad, maybe up to 5-6000

I use the breaks too but like to get near the powerband when conrnering

Do you think that's high enough to cause it

You could check wheel frame alignment too.
You may have a bias to one side of the tyre causing the bike to track right when the weight is off when 'driven' by the road against the engine.

I don't drive like that all the time anyway as I tend to fall off Embarassed

Are you revving the engine up before changing down, or just changing down a gear and dumping the clutch?

Really you should try match the engine revs before you change down a gear, for 5-6000 revs in 3rd you'd be doing around 7-8000 revs in 2nd, so clutch in, rev and kick gear down, let out clutch, start riding again.

Changing down whilst breaking, dumping, slight slide right before power on as I start leaning in

yep, as per the above post. Blip the throttle to match the revs before letting the clutch out.

Yeh you really need to blip the throttle before you change down, all you need to do is just twist the throttle before you let the clutch out again, it will make the change so much smoother, and it will speed you up a bit.

I did this on my CBT as it came naturally and was told that this wasn't the correct way to ride. I do it by accident sometimes as it does feel smoother and more natural. Is this how I should be changing gear then?

IMO you probably shouldn't be doing it on your CBT, lessons or test, but I'd have thought the majority of bikers do it in "the real world" because it smooths out your gear changes and your riding generally, it's kinder to the bike... and it sounds great!

I had this when i was too agressive on the drown shift and hadn't matched the revs and mentioned.

Either blip the throttle a bit more or shift down a bit later/more progressively.

I prefer to use the clutch and throttle when changing down at higher revs, rather than dumping it use it progressively to feed the power in like you would when pulling away quickly.

Yes... Very much so.

I'm stunned you were told not to, test or not. Shocked

Is this something taught across the board on CBT's these days? Surely not?

Downright dangerous if it is. Sad

A friend of mines dad was told that he'd fail his cbt if he continued to ride using the throttle and covering the front brake at the same time.

I ride like that in town because there are a lot of situations where you need to use the front brake very quickly and the time between you moving your hand from the throttle to brake could be wasted time..

It is one of those things that will help you be safer, but is deemed dangerous to learn. Go figure...

I blip the throttle all the time on downshifts...do get some funny looks as though to say 'what the bloody hell you doing...weirdo' but nevermind.

I did it on my test (well, i do it all the time....without thinking about it) and although i did fail (u turn) he didn't say anything about it at all.

iv done it a few time on my NSR, its quite scary if your on a roundabout with cars on your outside, but i think it is normal, if you really dont like the feeling just corner slower, otherwise i dont think theres much you can do about it

I was always taught not to change down mid corner.

I rarely change up mid corner (unless its like a sweeper type) but if it is a medium to tight corner than i just keep a steady throttle all the way round (unless a sheep decides to play sheep with you!)
