Honestly. Tight budget... £3000? for that you could easily pass your test, inc. lessons, and get yourself a lovely 400/600.

Hey fella

I've got a Honda Varadero 125 and it's a definite winner for big bike look and feel. I bought it because I wanted a decent-sized bike that was comfortable, good round town and more visible than the standard titchy 125. Honestly, if you took the L plates off few people would guess it's a 125.

The downside of it is that it's a heavy bike and it's not as fast as the sportier 125's because of the weight. Plus it's faired so dear to fix if you drop it. I wouldn't call it a particularly sporty 125 so that might put you off.

Does your £3000 include gear? That'll set you back a few hundred quid. Whatever, you can get a really decent Vara for a couple of grand, there are plenty about.

More info here..

4 strokes and 2 strokes are very different. A 4 stroke will generally be slower than an equivalent cc 2stroke.

A 2 stroke will use more fuel and it will burn oil so regular top ups are needed, a 4 stroke is generally more fuel efficient.

It just depends what you want a fast 125 or a slightly more reliable 125. But saying that, a 125 2 stroke will last for ever if you look after it.

The Hyosung gt 125 is suppose to be excellant. It looks bigger than a 125 so thats a bonus but am weary on getting parts.

If your spemding money on a new 125 its harder to sell when you pass your test as most learners usually start with a cheaper bike. Took 7 months to sell a brande new aprillia the other half had and we had to drop the price.

So if you have that large budget for a 125 get your test and get a bigger bike.

Also Veradero's are excellant. Thumbs Up

Honda varadero, and if you got the money stick a scorpion exhaust on it. Looks and sounds like a 600. Will happily do 70 and is extremely comfy.

Did several 230+ mile round trips on mine and didnt feel sore at all after them.

My dad used to have one and he got 75mph out of his and he made profit when he sold it again.

If you want a bike that sounds big, go for a Sachs XTC. It's got a wide bore and short stroke making it sound meatier. It also has an underseat exhaust. Not too sure about performance though.

https://www.bikez.com/motorcycles/sachs_xtc_125_2001.php

According to the website above the top speed is 73.9mph.

Here's a video of one.

I'd agree on both points - They look bigger than a standard 125 (I've had people asking me what size engine it was and was also asked if I knew there was an L Plate on the back cause 2 guys at work thought that someone had stuck it on as a joke!).

But the fairing bits are expensive (£300 because of a garage wall incident).

But they are good bikes, nippy and will easily get you up to 65/70 and be happy there all day.

Hey,

I have around the same budget as Jnr (around 4,000 EURO). Now, personally I would love to get a sporty 125cc. I have rode a bike (dont worry I'm getting lessons Very Happy) and I dont know alot about them.

But the Lifan Samurai 125 has caught my eye. Now like I say I dont know alot abou bikes. Can anyone give me advice on wether it's a decent bike, decent to start off with etc. etc.

Don't buy anything Chinese. End of.

I bought a Chinese 125 as my first bike (125) and my god it was a piece of shit. Don't bother with it. For the same amount of money you can buy a CBR125 which will be older but will last so much longer and won't break down on you everywhere.

Stay away from Chinese bikes, they're seriously not worth it.

Hi

£3k is not a tight budget. Very generous one.

However although the RS125 and its 2 stroke stablemates from other makes are fast and good handling bikes, they also tend to be thrashed to death and owned by people who are learing (including learning the effects on their wallets of thrashing a bike).

Restricted the performance will be about the same. Deresticted the 2 strokes are far quicker (and with the 4 strokes they are not capable of making enough power in road legal standard form to need restricting).

If you are just going to keep it for a couple of months to pass your test then go for a cheap 125 4 stroke. Spend £500~£1000 on it and you should get almost all your money back when it comes to selling it. Buy a newish bike (RS / Mito / CBR125 / etc) and it will loose a load of money, and you are not really going to have it long enough to be worthwhile.

If you are buying something to keep a year or 2 then the depreciation is less of an issue, and the performance of the 2 strokes when derestricted makes them worthwhile.

All the best

Keith

Sorry to hijack your thread but as y'all are discussing 125s thought I may as well butt in.

Is it at all possible to get a 125 then that will be comfortable at motorway speeds?

Everyone seems to suggest some of them when derestricted are fast but how fast and what worries me is that they're built for kids when I'm a pretty fat bloke so they may not be capable of those speeds with a hefty bloke like me on it.

Lastly I wish I had that kinda money to spend on a bike but I don't so what could you get for £1200?

Ok, so for the same price as the Lifan (around 1,600Euro) I could get a CBR secondhand? Would that be independently or in a shop?

I have around 4,000-5,000 euro to spend on a bike, insurance, and hopefully gear. I'm 16 years old so I cant go over the top Razz

Hi,

I have just recently bought a Honda NSR 125 RR 51 plate, i would recommend this to anyone who wants a quick and sporty looking bike, plus doesnt sound too much like a wasp in a jar.
Great performance, downside being that they are hard to get hold of. i called about 10 before getting mine and finding them all sold. Other than the problem i have at the moment with lining or rear arch, see workshop thread, the bike is immense!!

I have an NS, which is before UK NSR's and for a sports, they honestly don't come much better, and it's a 2 stroke so nippier than CBR which is a 4t, insurance was £215 TPO but aslong as the bikes in ok nick and cheapish you shouyld be fine, Ebay has always got a few NSR's. Thumbs Up

the insurance is high because you are insuring a performance 125, even though you may have it restricted you are still paying insurance for the unrestricted version which is basically the insurance companies taking every last penny from us,

Hi,

I've heard the CBR125 is a bit pants! I've got a 99 NSR125R ..and its brilliant...It's derestricted..giving a good top end, its flicky, nippy and looks like a much bigger bike!
Cant say much against the other bikes you all mention..dont know nowt...
I bought my NSR125R for £800 and it really only needs a new sprocket and chain!! and some other minor stuff.. probably about £60 of work ...I hope..lol

Hope this helps

Safe riding
