iv passed my cbt and want a bike. Iv posted a bit and asked people here about chinese imports cos they were cheap, but now iv found a 1989 honda ns125 really close to me. However iv been warned against 2T cos if higher maintenace, especially unrestricted ns125's cos the could have been thrashed and tend to fall apart over 25K. What are the opinions here of there bikes and my situation? thanks , Fras

Is this your only form of transport? Will you be relying on it for work or just pleasure rides?

You need to tell us what your situation is before we can comment on it. Smile

2 strokes in general tend to be lightweight, overtuned and highly stressed engines.

In other words they are more highly strung than my EX-girlfeind.

However they are also quick, agile and did I mention quick?

Generally 2 strokes require more care and mantenance than a 4 stroker but if it is just for fun, if you don't mind twirling spanners and getting up to your elbows in bikes occasionally then you should be fine.

If you want something that will put up with all the abuse you can throw at it with minimal maintenance and still be likely to start for you in the mornign then I'd suggest a 4 stroke like the YBR or CG.

hey thanks for the tips, trouble is the price of a ybr or cg in my area seems to be nothing short of a grand and while i can easily pick up a 2T for less. I have a friend who is much more mechanically minded than me and im sure if he ran through the basic maintenance id pick it up quickly. ok well thanks ill let you know what happens

Probaby fairly new Bikes then. My CG was a nine year old one, cost me £450 when I bought it through the friend network.

Just a thought but bike schools quite often know who is trading up and has a 125 they want to sell on to someone else. It may be worth chatting with the school who arranged your CBT.

Other places I've seen them advertised are independant bike mechanics.

2 strokes take more maintaining, but not much from what I've seen. Essentially they are more likely to fail than a 4 stroke bike, but they are much much easier to work with. Basically I managed to re build my engine in a few hours, first time trying.. Good luck doing that with a 4 stroke Wink

A 2 stroke 125 will be miles faster than a 4 stroke, was the reason I went 2 stroke. I've ridden a 4 stroke.. its just not as fun.

I've got an ns125 with over 37000 miles on the clock. The bike still performs great, though it still has stock exhuast so probably never been derestricted.
