Hey.

I start my new job next week working about 48 hours a week.

I will only be working from 2 July til the 16th September, but the question I have relates to how much I will earn, my Dad says you have to earn in the region of £4,000 a year before you can be taxed.

I probably won't earn that much, but will they tax me as normal anyway and then claim it back at the end of the tax year or will I not have tax deducted at all?

There's normally a threshold you need to pass before you start paying tax (and that threshold depends on your tax code). If you've not paid tax before, it'll probably be a couple of months before you start paying (you may need to complete a P46 for your employer in this case - to get a tax code). You may pay some, but if there is a refund due you should get it back at the end of the tax year (in theory).

Well I have a P46 form here that my employer sent me.

But I have a P45 from my previous job, would this suffice?

I think it depends on how long ago you left your previous job. the P46 is dead simple to complete, so I'd do it and give it to your new employer along with the P45 so Payroll can sort it out for you then Thumbs Up

even if you do get taxed you can claim it in april. My GF did and got a nice sum off £450 when she was really poor so was quite a nice time to get it. As your at uni as well it would be nice time to.

Though getting money out of the government is always a challenge Thumbs Up

Hi

Yes there is a threshold for tax, but chances are that they will average that out for the year, assuming you are working for the year. And then sort it out come April.

All the best
