Ive been watching various motorbike travel dvds recently such as long way round, journey beyond reason and to an extent (travel wise) the race to dakar.

Now watching these has injected me with the travel bug.

I want to do a trip to europe next summer for hopfully 5-6 weeks and take a lot in.

Is there much planning involved or could i just book a ferry and make the trip up as i go along?

Things like breaking down etc dont worry me too much as i belive there isnt a situation that cannot be solved.

Ive recently purchased an rsvr, obviously not a touring bike at all. Could it be done on this bike? I know tyres, chains sprockets etc will wear a lot quicker and will need to be changed. Or is it best buying a more "touring abled" bike for the trip? I would like to do longer trips across different parts of the world within the next few years.

Yeah it's easily possible, an RSV isn't a bad touring bike at all in my opinion.

Some planning can pay dividends, i.e. researching the places you fancy going, but it's often good to do things on the fly - too much planning induces stress and reduces flexibility.

i dont plan on going for as long as you are maybe 10days... Im not planning it as fas as the routes concered, just plan on heading south i have couple places and roads which id like to ride and see. but other than that im just gana wing it and hope it works out lol. Confused

I went to Europe for three months. Only a rough route with no specific stops. Not much planning. No breakdown cover. Had a great time- no problems.

I think you can tour on any bike. As you like your RSVR go on that. Smile

itchy is currently snap touring, all last minute, just booked a ferry last week and went on monday night. Destination italy i think and just buggered off... few things he worried about like getting the bike spot on but thats it really and again took him a weekend to sort it out.

If you're heading for Europe but don't want to plan too much (which I would agree with everyone else is the most fun way to do it) then get yourself a copy of the relevant lonely planet.

I used "Lonely Planet on a Shoestring - Guide to Europe." It meant that where ever I ended up, I just turned to the right page and could see useful info about places nearby - accomodation, interesting sights, good places to eat etc.

It means you won't pass by something special then hear about it later.

I tend to check Google Earth as well, most places where people put pictures up of are worth seeing.

Book ferry tickets and just go, its an amazing adventure and you won't fail to enjoy yourself. Its a lot easier than you would think.
