Hey all,

I was thinking about purchasing a monkey bike there are however a few things i would like to hear some opinions on.

I would be looking to use this bike to go down to the shops quickly or in emergencies where i need to get somewhere quick.

Anyway my parents bought me the bike i have at the moment will they feel ungreatful if i start using this little runaround aswell?

Id also like to get a monkey bike so that i dont have to unlock the big(ger) bike then wheel it round the garden and drive it out of the side gate possibly hiting the wing mirrors on the sides and scratching the indicators then getting back and locking it up again only to take it out 10 minutes later for example.

I could also use it to learn a little about the mechanics of a bike too. How simple are monkey bikes compared to 125s?

Cheers

Jack Thumbs Up

Insurance could be interesting.

I always worry about the safety aspect, when seeing them riding in normal traffic - it's hard to see them when in a car, never mind when in a van or lorry.

Your 125 is a pretty basic design, so you won't find many bikes simpler. Monkey bikes generally use an engine based around the c90.
Go for a cheap one and you may be forced to find out about it.

I have wondered in the past about a monkey bike or pit bike for road use, however it sounds like what you really need is maybe a shed in the front garden to keep your bike?

You'd want to keep the monkey bike inside or locked up somehow as well - as it's obviously even easier to steal and also quite likely to be targeted by kids etc.

I didn't want the bike to get dirty so I left the cover on the plate and seat for ages

I got mine as they are cheap, small to keep and damn inenexpensive to run. The insurance with Adrian Flux is £11 a month and did around 500 miles on 2 full tanks, costing less than £20

The only thing wrong with this statement is rhe quick part Laughing It will do 50mph give or take an mph.

They are ideal for a little nip to the shops or for short journeys when it may be a pain to get all geared up on a bigger bike. It is so small that it will fit through the smallest of gaps and makes communting fun Wink .

When your head is at the same height as the wing mirrors or just above then it may be hard for drivers to see you coming, but the number of cars that move out oif the way maybe contradicts this statement?

People always stop and stare, and you'll find complete strangers come over and start talking about it.

Pfft Rolling Eyes Shhh!

McGee always laughs when he see pics of the beast as its got a bicycle lock through the back wheel. With the bike weighing 70Kg, not much of a deterent Laughing Had the bike since December and has always been kept outside and had no problems. In a busy crime ridden area, then yes, a shed is vital.

The 1st time you said that I was straight onto eBay looking for engines, and now I keep looking at bikes when out and about thinking 'would that fit in my bike?' Laughing

Thank you everyone for your information!

How much was your monkey(YES I KNOW ITS NOT CALLED A MONKEY)?

Another problem is that most of my journeys are short like very short. about 500m down the road is school, the park and ASDA. I need little more to live. Work is a fair bit further so i could still use my 125 to there.

My 125 is a Honda XR fyi.

Baring in mind 50mph is only 15 off my top speed now anyway its actually quite fast lol.

That should do for questions at the moment.

Cheers,

Jack

Was thinking of getting one myself at some point as the commute to work is 700 yards and it'd be much more fun than a 'ped, and it's a waste of petrol (and time) to get the ZZR out for the trip.. Smile

Actually, probably stick to cycling it instead, even though the MTB chucked me off (jammed chain) right in the middle of a rush hour dual carriageway (I was crossing) and skinned my knee.. Sad

XR125? I'd honestly not bother with the expense of getting a second bike. Practice getting it in and out of the garden without damaging it.

yeah it would be a bit expensive. but thats what money is for right =]

I can get it out and in just that the real thing is unlocking the chain then having to ride it round the garden to get out. Mehhh maybe im just being idealistic.

Considering.

Where are you going to keep the monkey bike and are you going to lock it up? Seems the only difference will be that it's going to be a bit narrower. You could always cut your bars down, or get some aftermarket bars that are a bit shorter on the XR.

id probably keep it in my sun lounge or make a small wooden box for it (lol) for security i may buy an extra disc and/or one of those plastic locks for it.

Yeah its the wing mirrors actually that are being hit. so yeah what could i do to change that? new wing mirrors? or like GGGGGG man said and shorten the bars?

Thumbs Up

Just wheelie through the gate and I expect your bars would be higher than the posts. maybe

I'm thinking - get a spare set of mirrors and cut them up so you've got a lockable hinge or similar, so you can easily fold them in.

Of course, mirrors aren't actually a legal requirement Smile.

I've got a monkey bike (Honda ST70 Dax) old school Laughing

Umm can't really help you about riding them on the road because i can't (to young Sad )

But it's a reet giggle, it wheelies in all 3 gears. Laughing I'm currently hounding ebay for another one, the plan is to streetfighter it.

Heres a pic, note the flowery seat for added old schoolness.
