 Posted: 10:08 - 30 Jun 2007 Post subject: Getting a "monkey bike" |
 |
|
Hey all,
I was thinking about purchasing a monkey bike there are however a few things i would like to hear some opinions on.
I would be looking to use this bike to go down to the shops quickly or in emergencies where i need to get somewhere quick.
Anyway my parents bought me the bike i have at the moment will they feel ungreatful if i start using this little runaround aswell?
Id also like to get a monkey bike so that i dont have to unlock the big(ger) bike then wheel it round the garden and drive it out of the side gate possibly hiting the wing mirrors on the sides and scratching the indicators then getting back and locking it up again only to take it out 10 minutes later for example.
I could also use it to learn a little about the mechanics of a bike too. How simple are monkey bikes compared to 125s?
Cheers

I didn't want the bike to get dirty so I left the cover on the plate and seat for ages

I got mine as they are cheap, small to keep and damn inenexpensive to run. The insurance with Adrian Flux is £11 a month and did around 500 miles on 2 full tanks, costing less than £20

The only thing wrong with this statement is rhe quick part It will do 50mph give or take an mph.
They are ideal for a little nip to the shops or for short journeys when it may be a pain to get all geared up on a bigger bike. It is so small that it will fit through the smallest of gaps and makes communting fun .

Brian from Big Brother could figure it out with no manual and no problems
www.monkeybike.co.uk sell most if not all parts

When your head is at the same height as the wing mirrors or just above then it may be hard for drivers to see you coming, but the number of cars that move out oif the way maybe contradicts this statement?
People always stop and stare, and you'll find complete strangers come over and start talking about it.
| Quote: | You'd want to keep the monkey bike inside or locked up somehow as well - as it's obviously even easier to steal and also quite likely to be targeted by kids etc. |
Pfft
McGee always laughs when he see pics of the beast as its got a bicycle lock through the back wheel. With the bike weighing 70Kg, not much of a deterent Had the bike since December and has always been kept outside and had no problems. In a busy crime ridden area, then yes, a shed is vital.

Was thinking of getting one myself at some point as the commute to work is 700 yards and it'd be much more fun than a 'ped, and it's a waste of petrol (and time) to get the ZZR out for the trip..
Actually, probably stick to cycling it instead, even though the MTB chucked me off (jammed chain) right in the middle of a rush hour dual carriageway (I was crossing) and skinned my knee..

id probably keep it in my sun lounge or make a small wooden box for it (lol) for security i may buy an extra disc and/or one of those plastic locks for it.
Yeah its the wing mirrors actually that are being hit. so yeah what could i do to change that? new wing mirrors? or like GGGGGG man said and shorten the bars?

I'm thinking - get a spare set of mirrors and cut them up so you've got a lockable hinge or similar, so you can easily fold them in.
Of course, mirrors aren't actually a legal requirement . |

I've got a monkey bike (Honda ST70 Dax) old school
Umm can't really help you about riding them on the road because i can't (to young )
But it's a reet giggle, it wheelies in all 3 gears. I'm currently hounding ebay for another one, the plan is to streetfighter it.
Heres a pic, note the flowery seat for added old schoolness.

Alright Gman, i guess id have to buy some new shorter bars off honda/ebay/somewhere.
the locking hinge thing you said about would i be able to get one off a DIY store or something?
or i could buy a small motor that tucks them in and out like electric car mirrors =]
