noise from engine

my bike has started making a kind of knocking noise, its not very loud and only appears once the engine has warmed up

it increases as you rev the bike, but its loudest at tickover, you only really hear it when listining for it but i am getting quite paranoid! i thought it might be camchain but that was checked when the bike went in to the garage for a carb problem the other day

any suggestions?

Could be many things, best to seek help.

how loud was the noise? this is fairly faint and its just got back from the garage getting a carb float problem sorted so i would be suprised if its anything on that magnitude

forgive my ignorance but what are tappets?

and its doesnt sound like the clutch to me, not coming from the right area, possible thought i suppose, would this mean with the clutch in the noise should dissapear is it is a clutch issue?

have the big ends listened to by a proper bike mechanic.

took it back to the garage today to follow up some damage that was caused during the carb fix,

while i was there i had the guy check it out and he says its most likely the camchain tensioners going on the way out, they looked at it before but only quickly while doing the other job and he says from what he can see its got to be a tensioner issue

bit of a relief! i was expections a valve clearence job

Check the oil. I've had car engines do this when low on oil before.

just had new oil and filter, i didnt know when it had last been changed so i thought best be safe, the level is fine. filled with semi-synthetic 10w-40, i was told in the shop fully synth is really only for race bikes that are constantly at high rpm

the old stuff was a bit dark but nothing too bad, certainly not the dark black the oil in my car was when i swapped it!
