Why do bikers nod, when they pass each other?

When I'm on my way home each evening, there are always loads, of big sports bikes heading off to some meeting place, and I'm like a little nodding dog, on my scooter.

I've even had Old Bill nod me

I'm not complaining, I think it's great, but I'm curious as to why? Confused

It's a sign of respect amongst Bikers in general, basicaly you're on a bike and not in a car would be the simple answer...

Biker's acknowledge bikers because they know why the other guy is out on their bike Smile

We also rely on others more when things go wrong. I won't drive or ride past a stricken biker if it's possible to stop without asking if they need help. Car drivers don't have the cameraderie that bikers in general enjoy.

In bygone days motorists driving the same cars used to flash their lights, or wave etc... and would certainly stop to help other motorists in the same type of cars i.e. Morris Minor owners, Austin A7 etc... But that's all gone now and it's down to us bikers to keep the fraternal side of motoring up. Wink

Yeah, although I dont know a great deal about bikes, if I ever see a biker on the hard shoulder, if I see them in time to slow down and pull over I will, see if they are outta petrol or anything I could help with.

Usually their ust having a smoke, but there we go. Also it's nice to know if you broke down on the side of a road or had trouble, a fellow bike would most likely pull over to see if your ok Thumbs Up

Well that's because Morris Minors and Austin A7's were unreliable and crap vehicles, once the Japanese cars hit the U.K market cars pretty much stopped breaking down! Laughing

Just be glad you're in the UK. I moved to Sweden a few months ago, and its a left hand wave. Which is much more of a pain. I tried to do the nod at first, but I don't think they get it.

Same as in uk though, the Harley riders never acknowledge you, just each other!

(Obviously too cool)

Oi! Evil or Very Mad Razz

I have two, and they're great fun and generally reliable if you look after them. Minor owners do still on the whole wave to each other. I'll always stop if I see one broken down because the chances are it can be fixed with a lump hammer and a bit of twine Laughing

bikers are the minority and because of this they tend to stay together more.

For example, last night i was at a petrol station after a ride with a friend and a guy on a RS125 was at the pump and couldnt get the bike started. We went over and in the end had to bump start it for him. Now, had we been car drivers the chances of us helping him out are less IMO.

Not to mention the chances of you having the faintest clue of how to resolve mechanical problems.

Yea, but it was just a bump start so would have been easy really. Same as a car only easier due to less weight Thumbs Up

lol you just reminded me my friend had a morris minor, she was going to pimp it out. She contacted a suspension company in the states about building a custom adjustable hydraulics suspension thingy for it that would make it bounce up and down.....

they asked her what the f*ck a morris minor was....

2CV drivers also nod, wave and flash the headlights as they too are a dying breed. Wink

I just returned from a road trip through Spain and France...not on the bike unfortunately, and the Spannish riders stick their right leg out to acknowledge a car pulling to the right to let them passed.......while it is nice to be appreciated it looks like they have cramp or trapped a bollock!

I got a nod the other day from a biker when I was driving my car.

Either there's some kind of telephatic connection, or he was simply nodding at me because I made eye contact to let him know I'd seen him.

Or it was someone I know Very Happy

Maybe you nodded without realising, as it becomes natural when you see another biker so even thou you are in a car you still want to nod, well I do Very Happy

I've also had some funny looks from the OH asking me what I was doing "squirming about" while driving the other day... I was sticking my knee out on a corner Embarassed Laughing
